“Eugenics Movement: Culling Hip Hop” by Mr. Williams (Rap Artist from Ohio(OH))

RadioIndy is pleased to present Mr. Williams with a GrIndie Award for their CD "Eugenics Movement: Culling Hip Hop"

"Eugenics Movement: Culling Hip Hop" by Mr. Williams is a very expressive example of lyrical hip-hop and poetry fused together. Combining Andre 3000's aptitude for situational hip-hop with Saul Williams' solid mastership of poetic-rap this CD moves to break barriers and stereotypes and transcends the formula of today's hip-hop. Even the beats, which could be compared to the jazzy synthesized creations of soul groups in the early 90s, are quick to tell the listener that this is not your usual brand of hip-hop. One of the most stand-out tracks is the jazzy "If I wanted To (Remix)" which makes a bold stand for nonconformity. Another of our favorites is the poignant "Please Don't" as both its lyrical and vocal content express emotional pain. Fans of conscious hip-hop and gritty spoken word will quickly become fans of "Eugenics Movement: Culling Hip Hop".

Highlights are "Cool Water," which starts out with a long, sexy instrumental segment that builds into a strong, sexy groove that nicely matches the lyrical theme of the song. "Time is Running Out" is another parcticularly noteworthy track with a brief synthesizer intro that builds into a full groove and a memorable chorus with strong female backing vocals and keyboard counter part. "A day of 5000 degrees" by Kiki Super Rolling Sound is a pleasantly nightmarish ride through dark times. It claims to be music inspired by the aftermath of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in WWII, and it delivers. Its centerpiece is the guitar work of Masato Kikui, which acts as the sometimes harrowing, sometimes peaceful voice through atmospheric, sound-scape accompanied tracks. The darkest and most powerful track, without a doubt is "White Light - 5000 degrees Centigrade - a Bomb Blast - Black Rain". How's that for a title? It's not all "Horrorshow" though. "The Best of Mr. Tune" by John Cammelot (Rock Artist from Illinois(IL))

RadioIndy is pleased to present John Cammelot with  a GrIndie Award for their CD "The Best of Mr. Tune"

"The Best of Mr. Tune" is a refreshing collection of 80's rock tracks from a variety of John Cammelot's bands including Squadron, Flyer, and Mandel Machine. The bands are tight and the musicianship on the CD is tremendous, especially John's keyboard and piano work and the electric guitar work. John's vocals are very effective in this rock genre, and are filled on a number of tracks with rich harmonies. "Enjoy" is one of our favorite tracks, with its excellent hook and harmony-filled chorus. "Song On a Breeze' is an impressive instrumental number that features a very cool synthesizer intro into a beautiful piano piece that is filled with interesting synthesizer sounds. "Don't Let the Blues" effectively takes on a more bluesy, soulful tone, and shows the versatility of John's vocals. The musicianship on "Jive" blew us away. Any fan of 80s rock bands such as Styx or the Eagles should check out this collection from John's bands.

"Maghreb Jazz Guitar" by Jan Wouter Oostenrijk is a very interesting and diverse collection of world/jazz tunes, fusing jazz-flavors and tribal percussion with lyrics presented in the Arabic language. Careful production provides an effective balance between percussion and guitar work. The slow-pace instrumental track "Nardis" opens with a very nice native flute melody, giving this song a very middle-eastern vibe. The beat-driven "My Favourite Things" grabs listeners' attention with its intriguing percussion intro, mixing together rare percussive sounds. Moreover, the very groovy "Barud" flaunts a nice electric guitar lead and a memorable Indian-influenced melody. Fans of culturally diverse songs and rich percussion will enjoy this CD.

"Second Avenue Serenade" by Laslo Cameo (Rock Artist from Vermont(VT))

"Second Avenue Serenade" by Laslo Cameo is an enjoyable Americana CD. The music on this CD is tight with very professional musicianship throughout. The alternating male and female leads on the tracks keep the songs on the CD sounding fresh, as does the varied styles from modern country, to blues, to adult rock. The clean recording quality is totally pro and very well-suited for this genre. "How Can You Lose" is a solid track featuring Leslie's clean, pitch-perfect vocal style, with a memorable chorus that includes a nice keyboard/organ countermelody. "Stella Joy" is a soulful bluesy tune with a cool opening acoustic guitar lick and effective use of tremolo electric guitar to back up Randy's raspy vocals, which work well in this bluesy style. "Capiche?" by Xraydusa (Hip-Hop Artist from San Francisco, California(CA))

RadioIndy is pleased to present Xraydusa with a GrIndie Award for their CD "Capiche?"

"Capiche?" by Xraydusa plays upon the strings of the subconscious conjuring up the abstract, the groovy, and the downright trippy elements of the listener's inner workings. It is a methodically mad but effective instrumental arrangement of half hip-hop, half 70's funk beats, random noises, live instruments, DJ scratching, and an occasional mix of something that smacks of tribal influence. A highlight of the CD is the high level of creativity and the ability to bring together the diverse sound effects and styles of music ot yield a very interesting and enjoyable CD. The production and instrumentation quality are superb. The song, "the amberrr" is a song favorite with its anthem-like, dizzying dance grooves, signaturely weaving in and out of beat breaks armed with a wailing alarm and guitar in the highs and percussion in the lows. The smooth saxophone sound of "Spaghetti Straps" is completely jazzy and chill and a great note on which to end the CD. It's relatively straightforward and traditional when compared to the other tracks on the CD that we checked out, but the more subtle production on this track provides its charm. The reverse playback vocal effect along with the tight drum and bass groove add fine funk to the song. All in all, "Capiche?" is a funky, flamboyant delight for fans of multiple genres--from psychedelic to funk to hip-hop.

"Smashing Preconceptions" by Stereo Volvo (Jazz Artist from Australia)

RadioIndy is pleased to present Stereo Volvo with a GrIndie Award for their CD "Smashing Preconceptions"

"Smashing Preconceptions" by Stereo Volvo is a Space-Dub instrumental album with a big arsenal. It combines Jazz, Afro -Jamaican, Dub, Ambient, Drum N' Bass and much more. It is well produced with tight beats, spacy sounds and very cool muted trumpet work. There is a constant mysticism to this album and it is floaty, but organic at the same time. Highlights include "Phoenix" (Wig-Out), which is a definite journey of a track with a grounded rhythm section and guitar and trumpet eerily talking to one another. "Gunya" is more up-tempo featuring the signature trumpet with a bowed-string sounding guitar coming at you. Pick this up if you like beats and ambience.

"Blue Circle" by Dave Foster (Pop Artist from New York City, New York(NY))

RadioIndy is pleased to present Dave Foster with a GrIndie award for their CD "Blue Circle"

Getting inside the music of "Blue Circle" by Dave Foster is likened to a journey to the center of the Earth, radically different yet refreshingly welcoming, as a traveler to a foreign land comes across a landmark that has beckoned for years. This songwriter reminded us of greats like John Lennon and even Dave Matthews; thought-provoking and versatile lyrically, along with a masterful use of modern beats, funky throw-backs, and synthesized vocals. We especially enjoyed "Falling To Pieces", which combines all of the aforementioned elements of genius songwriting, production, and performance. Way far out front vocals and bitter raw emotion drive us to pick our favorite, "All You Gave To Me", for it's contemporary bass-line and hip lyrical makeup.
