RadioIndy is pleased to present T.A.O. (The Anointed Ones) with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Journey to the Top Begins "

T.A.O. (The Anointed Ones) charms the musical world with the delightfully smooth Jazz/Gospel album "Journey to the Top Begins." Using the flute as the main instrument, Richard D. Hegens, Jr. skillfully compiles a collection of easy listening pieces with polished maturity and grace. His talent shines on songs such as "Keeping It Real" or "Ballad," as he gives the audience a performance that captures the emotional spirit his music reveals. His refined flute talents stir up keen interest as he leads off the album with a not-so-traditional rendition of "Amazing Grace" which conjures a slightly livelier tempo and strong and solid beat. Although most of this album is instrumental, "Safe in His Arms" and "When I Think About the Lord" present beautiful female vocals as sweet and harmonious as the lyrics they sing. Jazz flavor at its best, "Otulp" highlights striking piano, soft brushes, and the melodious sounds of the flute. Sounds of stunning flute blended with engaging smooth Jazz/Gospel will lift your spirits and soothe your soul when you hear the wonderful songs of T.A.O.'s "Journey to the Top Begins."

RadioIndy is pleased to present IYAM with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Better Than Ever "

Released for '09, IYAM's "Better Than Ever" CD, a collection of Classic Rock with Heavy Metal theatrics, sounds as fresh and relevant as ever. Since the likes of Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath popularized grandiose, anthem like Hard Rock virtues back in the day, many other sub-genres of Rock have come and gone, but Hard Rock and Metal's appeal has never waned. IYAM prove themselves accomplished purveyors in their own right, displaying said virtues on an album that hits all the right marks: songs built on riffs of unstoppable force, slashing lead guitar work worthy of Randy Rhodes, well-crafted and exemplary lyrics that get to the heart of what Metal is all about; and a singer with the rage, fire, and immediacy to bring it all home. Highlights include "Witches And Warlocks," built on a thundering blues riff, CD-opener "All Is Well," a rocker with soaring hooks, and "Going Through The Motions," with its Gothic atmosphere. IYAM's "Better Than Ever" CD is, simply, well-executed and powerful classic hard rock.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Lisa Hugo with a GrIndie Award for the CD "It's Time "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Lisa Hugo with a GrIndie Award for the CD "It's Time "

In the tradition of such venerable performers as Karen Carpenter and Eva Cassidy, Lisa Hugo straddles the boundaries of jazz and pop with equal ease and finesse on her fine new CD, "It's Time." With her supple, three octave vocal range and the instincts of a seasoned vet, the Australian born and world-traveled, pianist and singer/songwriter simply delights on this 11-song collection of pop, jazz, and easy listening songs. Backed by a small combo with exemplary taste and feel, Hugo's piano sets the tone on jazzier numbers like the CD opener, "With You I Can Be Me" and "Oh My Baby," while the subdued, "Please Try to Understand," finds Hugo delivering an emotion-laden confessional with only the leanest of guitar, bass, and sprinkling of cymbals. Although very comfortable and adept with the jazz-pop style, the real highlight of the set is "Butterfly," a wonderfully melodic pop tune as engaging as it is uplifting. Lisa Hugo's bio is one filled with musical accomplishment all across the globe, but her new CD stands on its own merits. Fans of adult-oriented, tuneful jazz-pop will thoroughly enjoy the perfect blend of polished and sophisticated easy listening music on "It's Time."

RadioIndy is pleased to present Tunto with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Lempi "

Mixing jazz and world-infused explorations of melody and harmony with beats and soundscapes from the electronica school, Tunto's "Lempi" CD is a boldly inventive map into a musical world without borders. With titles that signify many moods such as, "Caressing Music," "Itch Music," or "Yearning Music," Tunto aspires to reveal his imagination is more than up to the task of translating and transposing, raw emotion into music form, a subjective aesthetic that demands no small amount of receptivity and reciprocation from his listeners. Tunto pulls it off quite effectively and this has much to do with the range of textures, vocals and instrumentals, he throws into the mix as well as the musical symbolism his melodies conjure. Tunto's provocative third CD, "Lempi," is an informed rendering of a brave new world of music's breadth and elasticity; an album for jazz, world music, and experimental electronica enthusiasts.

Robin Lee Sinclair may be Australian, but don't think he doesn't know a little something about American country music. Boasting 14 tracks abounding in country and country-rock smarts and know-how, Sinclair's CD, "Honky Tonk Heaven," is packed with tuneful and well executed songs showcasing his own and his band's, range and presence. The title track, "Honky Tonk Heaven," makes for a perfect CD-opener, with Sinclair's intense lead vocals soaring on a chorus that is both immediate and timeless. "Country Member" takes it uptown with a fine quick-step shuffle tailor-made for the dance floor, while "Remember Me" is moving and urgent, with shades of Elvis in Sinclair's dramatic reading. Other highlights include "Shannon," an up-tempo number with a splendid banjo backing, "Bouncin' Back," featuring a Jerry Lee Lewis-like piano-pounding-rhythm, and the boppin', 50's-inspired "And Then There Was You." Throughout, though, Robin Lee Sinclair proves himself a polished and seasoned vocalist on his effortlessly pleasing CD, "Honky Tonk Heaven."

RadioIndy is pleased to present Robert R. Patterson with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Never Said Good Bye "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Robert R. Patterson with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Never Said Good Bye "

Robert R. Patterson's second CD, "Never Said Good Bye" finds the guitarist / singer-songwriter furthering an exploration of his unique songcraft in ways as original and inventive as they are satisfying. A virtuoso on guitar, Patterson turns his acoustic and electric guitars loose over 12 songs that delve into classical, folk, and blues influences which, nevertheless, blend seamlessly into a whole of potent musicality. Where the song "Five Dollar Mohawk" is a blues-rock workout with slashing slide licks, the hauntingly beautiful "Smile Little One" features acoustic picking as delicate as it is pristine. "Little Spanish Evening," an acoustic solo instrumental, is a veritable wordless lullaby, while the CD opener and titled track, "Never Said Good Bye" is an oddly effective composition that's both exotic and eccentric. Much of the album finds Patterson in elemental mode, his lone guitar and rich voice breathing life into songs of loss and redemption, but on the ballad, "Life," a deep and sonorous cello accompaniment raises the performance to solemnity. As second releases go, Robert R Patterson's "Never Said Good Bye" CD is a fine sophomore album, building on the echoes of his first, while pointing forward with his evolving potential.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Graham Gorrie with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Mark on the Stage "

Graham Gorrie refuses to be bound by convention or stylistic constraints on his fine debut CD, "Mark on the Stage," instead carving out a rock 'n' roll path that emphasizes smart songcraft . Like his brilliant fellow Aussie singer-songwriter, Paul Kelly, Gorrie's originality is borne out over 13 rock / folk-rock songs that are as meaningful as they are satisfying. Songs like CD-opener, "Closing My Eyes," with its alternating guitar and harmonica fills or "Hard to Do," with its effective female-lead interpolations, each display a deft touch for finding the right textural context for the composition at hand. On "Red Wine Dreams" Gorrie offers up a rare jazz-like ambience while the socially-conscious "Resistance," with its engaging melody, calls to mind yet another Australian act, the great Midnight Oil. Throughout the album, though, Gorrie's songs resonate with conviction and true-believer passion, making "Mark on the Stage" not only a particularly noteworthy debut CD, but one that will likely be a jumping-off point for an artist of considerable talent.

Buffalo Blues Band's seven-track debut disc, "One Last Look," will lasso listeners in with some tasty bluesy treats. The first spin on this album and also the title track, "One Last Look," brings out the deep and soulful harmonica with absorbing blues riffs. The deep-rooted vocals on "Conoco Saloon Blues" brings together the rhythmic beats of the solid bass and guitar. Taking to the softer side of the album, "Feels Like Rain," strikes a chord of a different note as the charming vocals will sweep you away while the guitar gently plays a sweet accompaniment. The chemistry within the band is clearly heard in "Killin' Floor," as each instrument is strikingly dominant in their rock solid fills and pure intensity to the bouncy beat. Not only will you feel the high amount of energy this group conducts but you will be moved by the tonality of their musicianship. RadioIndy is pleased to present Caroline Gilmour with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Someday "

Caroline Gilmour's debut CD, "Someday," is simply an excellent example of female-fronted heartland rock played with fire, conviction, and the kind of passion that keeps rock 'n' roll vital. Both in her voice and straight-up rock style, Gilmour, despite being Scottish, actually recalls such North American artists as Melissa Etheridge, Heart, and Sheryl Crow (among others) over 12 songs imbued with Classic Rock-like melody and drive. The album opener, "Be With Me Tonight," for instance, gets things off to a rocking start with a power-chord-backed chorus worthy of any of Pat Benatar's best hits, while the infectious "After All This Time" has a hook that's tailor made for adult oriented rock play lists. Drawn from personal experience, the singer-songwriter's taut and emotionally charged songs such as "I Thank You" and "Before I Can Fall," also find their mark, due particularly to a powerful backing band at one with the material and the vision behind it. While she may be a newcomer to the scene, don't expect Caroline Gilmour's terrific CD to go unnoticed; "Someday" is here for fans of Classic Rock as polished as it is raw and untamed.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Mark Lennon with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Down the Mountain "

Mark Lennon's third CD, "Down the Mountain," finds the terrific LA-based singer-songwriter continuing his musical journey down that Americana trail blazed by the likes of legends such as Ryan Adams, Gene Clark, and Gram Parsons. And like those notable forerunners, Lennon's ease and naturalness with the country-tinged rock style is as pure as it is noteworthy. With vocal inflections that sound clear-as-mountain-stream authentic, Lennon's songs of love's travails and the struggle to find meaning in mixed-up times, really strike home on tunes such as "What I Could Be With You," "Broken," and the wonderful "My Hometown," a track that recalls American Beauty-era Grateful Dead. As accessible and tuneful as all the songs are, though, Lennon's duet with Simone Stevens on "Wildside" has a fragile beauty that goes beyond questions of style or genre, invoking instead the notion that great music knows no such boundaries. With a multi-textured Americana / Country Rock ensemble providing the perfect backdrop for "Down the Mountain," Mark Lennon's latest CD is a triumph of style and delivery.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Michael W. Arrington with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Michael Arrington, Vocal and Saxaphone "

Whereas Michael Arrington's outstanding debut CD was a straight-up country effort showcasing the refined singer's well-crafted songs and the classic guitar-piano-steel accessories of the album's country roots, on "Michael Arrington, Vocal & Saxaphone" Arrington and his crack Nashville sidemen deliver a more diverse collection of mainly traditional songs that more than ably cover the rest of Nashville's grand legacy. With Arrington stepping back from the mic to concentrate on his ample sax talents, this 10-song CD of mostly instrumental covers recalls no less a figure than Arrington's childhood inspiration, the renowned saxophonist and bandleader Boots Randolph. With excellent renditions of such traditional nuggets as "Rolling in My Sweet Baby's Arms," and "Rocky Top," and the jazz ambience of "Misty," "Michael Arrington, Vocal & Saxaphone" has a throwback vibe that verily channels a bygone era. In that same vein, Arrington and band tackle standards such as "Summertime" and "Tennessee Waltz" with the kind of detail and precision one would expect from seasoned vets, while a vocal take of Merle Haggard's "Big City" has all the bounce and swing of the original. Michael Arrington and his fine "Michael Arrington, Vocal & Saxaphone" CD is testament to the depths of talent this man has to offer.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Michael W. Arrington with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Something Old, Something Blue"

Michael Arrington's relaxed tenor voice proves the perfect vehicle for a terrific 10-song collection of traditional country on his debut CD, "Something Old, Something Blue." Actually featuring Loretta Lynn's outstanding backing band, the album swells on polished and dynamic arrangements which, combined with Arrington's often George Jones-like vocals, turn hook-filled, engaging songs like CD-opener, "Austin," or the small-town narrative, "Jack Jolly" into instant classics. The rocking "Where You Been All Night," with Arrington's trademark sax trading riffs with a rollicking honky tonk piano, fires on all pistons, while the Hank Williams-inspired "Hank's Grave" showcases the kind of pedal steel playing to make a grown man weep. Coming from a deep musical family (with roots that reach to the Grand Ol' Opry) Arrington's brand of tradition-steeped country on "Something Old, Something Blue" (particularly comparable to Tom T. Hall) is striking in its purity and honesty on a CD sure to resonate with any and all, traditional country music fans.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Anne Price with a GrIndie Award for the CD "A Few More Miles to Go "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Anne Price with a GrIndie Award for the CD "A Few More Miles to Go "

The accomplished folk singer, Anne Price, returns with her 4th CD, "A Few More Miles to Go," yet another wonderful collection of (mainly) traditional – if lesser exposed, potent folk songs. Opening with a cover of the late, under-appreciated contemporary folk stylist, Kate Wolf (an influence on Nanci Griffith), "The Trumpet Vine" serves as a terrific introduction for a varied set that reveals folk music's rich and evolving traditions. As a veteran and leading exponent of NYC's storied folk heritage, Price's mastery of the music's many styles is unquestioned. As such, her take on the mountain ballad-like "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key," a Woodie Guthrie tune originating from the seminal 1998 album by Billy Bragg & Wilco ("Mermaid Avenue") is true and affecting, as is her a cappella rendition of the English ballad, "The Keys of Canterbury." Elsewhere, Price's mid-range voice (not unlike Griffith's instrument these days) is the perfect vehicle for songs of homespun humor such as "Chocolate," children's sing-alongs songs like "Yucky Bugs," or praises to nature's wonder with "Black Waters." But nowhere is the singer better represented than on her Iris DeMent-like rendition of the playful Janis Ian tune, "My Autobiography." Without a doubt, Anne Price's excellent CD, "A Few More Miles to Go," is a fine addition to the American folk music library; the pairing of a revered songbook with a treasured performer.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Too Slim and the Taildraggers with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Free Your Mind "

With their 10th studio album, titled "Free Your Mind", the roots-rockers of Too Slim and the Taildraggers deliver an album deserving of a broader recognition than the semi-legendary regional status the band has garnered as a live-circuit fixture in their area. Leader Tim "Too Slim" Langford has mixed classic rock with R&B sensibilities as the Taildraggers more than ably provide a powerhouse ensemble backing on the 11 original compositions. Setting the tone with both his raspy vocals and fiery guitar work, Too Slim exhorts redemption on the slow rocker "Peace With the Maker," does battle with his demons on the blues-rock stomp of "Been Through Hell," and mines the depths of the times on the charged, minor-key gem, "Last Train." With the help of a talented trio of female singers, "Free Your Mind," while relying on a roots-rock vernacular, otherwise transcends easy categorization. The accoutrements are classic guitar-stoked rock, but the individual songs make this album less a product of a genre or type than a fully-realized rock statement. For a band whose recording career spans almost 20 years, it is no less accomplished than what you would expect, and the grit & polish of Too Slim & the Taildraggers' "Free your Mind" will be enjoyed by fans of Tom Petty and ZZ Top.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Miss Rose and Her Rhythm Percolators with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Who Walks In "

"Who Walks In," the debut album from Miss Rose and Her Rhythm Percolators, captures the sound & feel of 1920's & 1930's popular jazz styles with a mix of 11 classics & nearly forgotten songs from the era, including wonderful takes on such generation-crossing standards as "Ain't She Sweet" & "'Deed I Do". Singer & ukulele-player Sunga Rose leads a spot-on 4-piece band through a repertoire of pure nostalgia. And yet, this is no museum piece. The Rhythm Percolators quartet gives these songs new life with their deft & bouyant readings, making gems like the sprightly "At the Codfish Ball" sound almost contemporary. In addition, the outstanding title song, "Who Walks In," has a wonderful Eastern European bounce while the ballad "Shanghai Lil," exhibiting some of Miss Rose's best vocals, reveals as much about its era as it does the timelessness of great song craft. As the Deperession era's popular radio hits can be seen as timeless classics, Miss Rose and Her Rhythm Percolators' excellent new release "Who Walks In" is sure to appeal to music fans looking beyond today's hottest sounds and should definitely be given a listen to.
