RadioIndy is pleased to present Swingadelic with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Another Monday Night "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Swingadelic with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Another Monday Night "

On "Another Monday Night," the latest CD from Swingadelic, the accomplished "little" big band from the NY area shines as an ensemble as much as they do a collection of prolific soloists, proving the timelessness of sparkling and proficient jazz in an era when it sometimes feels like the great American invention has been marginalized. Bristling with solos of melody and bravura – like the stratospheric tenor of "Dance With You" or the deft piano skills of the "Puttin' On the Ritz"-like "Early Morning Special" – this group resembles no less a band (though half the size) than the famed Count Basie Orchestra, investing each number with volleys of inspired but precise mayhem. Can they swing? Absolutely! Their take on Ellington's "The Gal From Joe's" is insistent and nuanced. Can they get down and dirty? The dynamics of the Basie-esque "Buddy's Thang" make that a resounding "yes." What about the blues? They've got it covered. "Busy Body Blues" and "Big Band Blues" are steeped in the language and phraseology of the idiom's best practitioners. They do vocals too: "Back In New York City" is an excellent original, praising the city that never sleeps with a treatment that is both classic and contemporary – or, if you will, timeless. The music and playing on Swingadelic's latest disc "Another Monday Night," will want you hearing more of this swinging jazz with the kind of flair, melody, and dynamics to stir the heart and move the feet.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Peter One with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Alesso"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Peter One with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Alesso"

Weaving world rhythms and melodies over varied soundscapes that delight as much as they surprise, Peter One's debut CD, "Alesso," is a rare and potent mix of African folk, Afro-beat, and Reggae music styles. Hailing from the Ivory Coast, Peter One's relaxed and engaging voice imbue his nine original songs with a warmth that cannot be imitated, revealing in sing-along-worthy tunes the universality inherent in the African folk tradition. "Ono On My Mind" has a melody as immediate and lasting as they come, "Yamussokro" uses horns and banjo combination in a completely unique – but utterly African way, and "Hozana" bounces along on an insistent reggae beat. Elsewhere, the traditional "Jukru Lov'," with its orchestral textures, is anthem-like while the title track, "Alesso," a song exhorting native empowerment, resonates with deep conviction. Whether singing in his native language or French ("Ono On My Mind" is the only song in English), Peter One's CD has the gift of universal resonance, a quality that makes "Alesso" an excellent primer of original African folk music.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Cody & Bj Productions with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Extinct Is Forever "

Entertaining and educational, "Extinct Is Forever," by the talented Cody & Bj Productions, is comprised of catchy lyrics and beats with pop style. What better way to teach young children about saving wildlife and rainforests than using the gift of music. Hear the sounds of the wild on "Enter the Rainforest/Song of the Rainforest" with the soft and gentle voice of poetry. There will be a smile and happy feeling when you hear "Beautiful Macaw" as it gently moves with tropical flair. Kids won't be able to keep from singing to "Let's Be Friends With The Animals" with its sing-along style and bouncy beats. Sincere and heartfelt lyrics shine on "Imagine" as the vocals gracefully flow over the tender melody. RadioIndy is pleased to present Tom Cherry and Friends with a GrIndie Award for the CD "What You Talkin' About"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Tom Cherry and Friends with a GrIndie Award for the CD "What You Talkin' About"

Like a sunset on the beaches of Hawaii, "What You Talkin' About," the new CD by Tom Cherry and Friends, offers all the warmth and comfort of a Hawaiian breeze over the course of 10 songs as engaging as they are relaxing. With a sound anchored deep in '70's soft-rock waters, Cherry's smooth-as-sand-pebble voice is right at home on light and breezy R&B like pop songs of love and romance, and the channels our emotions navigate. The CD opener, "Sweet Honey" has all the earmarks, with its accented guitar fills and funky bass style. Further along, such '70's stalwarts as Michael Franks and Al Jarreau are convincingly conjured on tunes like "Driving to Lahaina" and "I Believe in Me" as Cherry and Friends mirror R&B / contemporary jazz veins of inspiration. "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" captures the milieu of the '70s era in a re-styling of the Creedence Clearwater hit, while the tender treatment accorded "Fool Such As I" shows Cherry at his relaxed best. Showing more adventurousness, Cherry re-works Dylan's "Watchtower" in a jazzy, funk-bottomed rendition that's fresh and respectful. Filled with hopefulness and affirmation, Tom Cherry and Friends' "What You Talkin' About" CD captures the mood and sound of another era to perfection, making it, in the process, a fine collection of Adult Contemporary pop for today's audience.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Planetary Nights with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Elliptical Motion "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Planetary Nights with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Elliptical Motion "

Leading off with the jaw-dropping, adrenaline-charged rocker, "Road Trip," Planetary Nights sets the bar pretty high on their debut CD, "Elliptical Motion." What follows is a further 14-track exploration of rock styles fused by spot-on instincts and flashes of potent song craft. Built on a classic rock attitude of tuneful and engaging hooks, "Elliptical Motion" is jam packed with songs of raw intensity such as "Luck Runnin' Out," or "Release The Peace" and soulful balladry of "If Ever" or "Hide Away," as well as radio-ready fare defying the constraints of categorization "Don't Hold Back," and "Ebony Eyes." "Countin' On You" features some fine Southside Johnny-style harp licks, while "Starting Over" sways with a mean Clarence Clemons-style tenor sax part that's both gritty and urbane. Regardless of influences, though, Planetary Nights' "Elliptical Motion" is a cohesive and sparkling CD that succeeds because it blazes its own path of genuine fire and passion; a trail that starts and ends at the heart of rock 'n' roll.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Heartscore with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Touch Me "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Heartscore with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Touch Me "

Heartscore's latest CD, "Touch Me," an inventive, adventurous, and – at times, bold, blend of modern rock styles, is both flamboyant and heady, a mixture as explosive as it is effective. Trading off Zappa-like song-shifts, sweeping dramatics worthy of Queen, or Progressive rock evocations reminiscent of Be-Bop Deluxe and /or Yes, "Touch Me" finds German multi-instrumentalist Dirk Radloff exploring rock's cerebral corners to produce a work that's both unusual and accessible. And while modernist and intellectual in its idiosyncrasy, tracks like "I'm Running" and the pretty, "You Are So Beautiful" attest to Heartscore's ability to neatly meld untamed and provocative arrangements with tunes that are fine and tuneful. Elsewhere, angular and abrasive torrents of sound make originals like "Never Leave the Highway" and lead song, "I Did It" into gems of propulsive dissonance. With Radloff's affected and stylized vocal delivery filling in the blanks, and smart synthesizer fills supplementing a guitar-bass-drum core, Heartscore's "Touch Me" CD is a triumph of substance and style sure to appeal to fans of progressive and original rock.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Jerry Harris with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Mama Roots "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Jerry Harris with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Mama Roots "

With his deep, gruff, and oh-so-soulful voice, Jerry Harris's "Mama Roots" CD is a funky reggae album with roots as deep as the singer's own legacy. The prolific composer, a fixture in the NY reggae scene since the '70s, has once again delivered an album of potent rhythm and soul, a propulsive mix of Roots Reggae and Rocksteady that reflects the legion of key Jamaican talents he has worked with in 4 decades as a leading and important Reggae artist. Highlights include "Just a Little Love We Need" and the topical "Global Warming," both owing a debt to Bob Marley-influenced grooves, but on "Mama" he shines with a Jimmy Cliff-like pop sensibility that transcends mere reggae-style labels. On "Mama Roots" Harris is once again backed by a stellar rhythm section, typically concise guitar fills, affecting horn parts, and backing vocals from a female chorus that is integral and subtle. Lyrically, there is a '70's-centric affirmative and positive social relevance running through all his songs as he alternately exhorts, cajoles, and pleads for the kind of world that seemed nearer to realization in those more innocent times. Nevertheless, there is nothing out of date about either Jerry Harris' message or the timeless brand of reggae he so effortlessly puts forth. Jerry Harris' "Mama Roots" CD continues an ageless tradition of intoxicating Reggae/Rocksteady music.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Paul Estro with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Paul Estro "

Paul Estro's self-titled debut forges a new and delightful territory in the country gospel music scene. Estro's raw and witty lyricism, coupled with his intimate Southern backwoods-style vocal intonations, fuses to create a palatable and innovative collection unlike its contemporaries. Throughout the 8-song CD, Estro relies on twangy guitar and female Gospel chorus - not to mention the occasional power chord - to deliver songs that extol the virtues of his faith, while skewering the trappings of the modern church. Moreover, the musicianship of this work is exceptional in technique and caters well to the emotions each song intends to invoke. Highlights include the country shuffle, "The Church of McWill," a Guitar Town-era, Steve Earle-like rocker called "Welcome Home," and the catchy "Pastor Martin is Coming." Fans of country gospel marked by clever satire will find a humorous solace in this memorable debut.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Andrea Hopkins & Jonathan Katz with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Happy Talk"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Andrea Hopkins & Jonathan Katz with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Happy Talk"

Twirling Jonathan Katz's nimble and deft piano accompaniment around her finger like an alluring chanteuse, Andrea Hopkins explores Vocal Jazz styles in a voice as emotive as it is beguiling on their engaging and very fine CD, "Happy Talk." Tackling a collection of primarily Great American Songbook standards – from Hoagy Carmichaels' "The Nearness of You," to Harold Arlen's immortal "Over the Rainbow," to Ray Noble's "Cherokee," Hopkins & Katz neatly strike a balance between provocative interpretations and familiar readings, proving how much life is still left in these old warhorses. Nevertheless, covering such standards as these (as well as "Bye Bye Blackbird" or "Misty") can be a double-edged sword for performers, exposing - as it does, new renditions to the harsh glow of comparison (i.e., to the Sinatra's, Fitzgerald's, and Garlands et al whose voices defined the songbook.) To their credit, the duo handles the challenge with assurance and no lack of self- confidence. Hopkins' voice is equal parts sultry, evocative, and pitch perfect, while Katz' keys delve the melodic and harmonic possibilities of these classic tunes with intelligence and nuance, but always in a manner that allows Hopkins room to interpret. In sum, the combined talents and sheer musicality of Andrea Hopkins & Jonathan Katz make "Happy Talk" an endearing and completely satisfying CD.

Musician/lyricist Gabe Rosales' first solo release, "Vital Nonsense," is jammed packed with an abundance of an energetic fusion of Hip-Hop and hard rock. The first track of the album, "Shrodingers Experiment," is a beautiful acoustic guitar piece with Latin flair. RadioIndy is pleased to present K-Bass with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Too Much Negativity "

K-Bass' splendid debut CD, "Too Much Negativity" is an exuberant and invigorating 11-track Reggae / Dancehall, bi-lingual feast of rhythm and melody cast in perfect harmony. Whether singing in French on the decidedly pop strains of "Union Africaine," or in English on the terrific Bob Marley-influenced title track, "Too Much Negativity," K-Bass strikes a balance between cultures that is accessible and profound in its cross-pollinations. The world-pop strains of "Douahode" provides a perfect example of this, featuring an incendiary surf-style guitar solo (reminiscent of Shakira) on a song with Middle Eastern tonalities, while the sing-along chorus of "Yuwa" reminds us that regardless of origins, great melodies cut across culture and ethnicity. Throughout, the band sparkles with stylized textural and dynamic flourishes as background choruses celebrate the inherent inclusiveness at the heart of Caribbean music. But whether it's Reggae, Dancehall, Afro-Beat, K-Bass' "Too Much Negativity" is world class: it's an upbeat, tuneful, completely danceable, and an engaging CD for the musically adventurous.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Mark Wayne Glasmire with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Life Goes On "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Mark Wayne Glasmire with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Life Goes On "

Mark Wayne Glasmire has such a smooth, polished, natural, and completely engaging, country tenor voice (not unlike James Taylor's), it's a wonder he's not a staple of Country or Adult Contemporary radio. A singer/songwriter who flashes a scalpel-like precision in his song craft (which also reflects his grounding in contemporary folk), his new CD, "Life Goes On," only furthers the storied – if largely unheralded, talents of this veteran performer. Utilizing a top-notch Nashville supporting ensemble, "Life Goes On" is filled with moving vignettes rich with utterly flawless flourishes of mandolin, fiddle, dobro-slide guitar, and Glasmire's own signature and virtuoso guitar playing. Songs like "Everything Is Gonna Be Alright," or "You Opened My Eyes," and lead track, "True Love Knows," resonate with heartfelt narratives and melodies that are both immediate and timeless. In fact, the 12-song CD is filled with songs that stand out as singular and noteworthy. And as he sings on the CD's title track "Life Goes On," "we should've seen it coming…" so too should music fans see the day when Mark Wayne Glasmire's name ranks with contemporaries like James Taylor, Vince Gill, and Rodney Crowell as substantive American artists.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Fred Nash with a GrIndie Award for the CD "TryingTo Find My Way "

Not that it matters, but the fact that Fred Nash's high tenor voice, which bears a resemblance to "I Can See Clearly Now" artist Johnny Nash, can't help but make a listener wonder if Fred is an offspring of the highly acclaimed former hit maker and impresario. That his CD-single, "Trying To Find My Way" has a similar soulful pop feel (albeit, without the reggae flavor), buoyed by an engaging, instantly captivating melody, only adds to the mystery. Regardless, "Trying To Find My Way," with its tasty, Steve Cropper-like guitar accompaniment accenting a spare, church-like arrangement, is a veritable throwback to an era when artists such as Nash, James, and Bobby were fashioning a crossover sound out of melding pop and soul sensibilities. Spiritual and meaningful, "Trying to Find My Way" is a fine debut CD-single from an artist who is likely to command attention not for his name, but for his escalating talent.

Tubie Pushe'e and his outstanding third release, "Blue With Envy," shines brightly with original and creative Texas-style blues. The first track, "Gimme Back My Car," leads off the disc with a flurry of good ol' blues. The vocals belt out the trials of love gone wrong, while the harmonica blows harmonious riffs and the walking bass line moves the steady and solid beat. Generous helpings of organ hooks and edgy guitar riffs heat up the bluesy tones of "Me and My Woman" which gives this song a deep, country roots feel. A bit of down home country flavor highlights the vocals while the piano complements the sweet guitar solo on "Home." "Skubie's Do 2" is a lush and lyrical guitar solo which is not only blues expression at its best but shows the great talent offered up on this disc. Stephen W. Duncan has ingeniously and eloquently mirrored the episodic events of the moon with his expressive and appropriately named album, "The Full Moons." Duncan has created an atmosphere of beautifully orchestrated compositions using various types of instrumentation with tones of classical and New Age finesse. Stunning and powerful, "Snow Moon," casts out a luscious melody highlighted by dazzling dynamics as the strings swell only to gently recede ever so softly. A bright and crisp piano cascades across the keys on "Flower Moon" while the Eastern tonality of various instruments gives way to a charming melody. Upbeat and lively, "Harvest Moon" impresses with country style with the banjo plucking away, while the percussion taps to a steady beat. The motif of Stephen W. RadioIndy is pleased to present Kid Goat with a GrIndie Award for the CD "These People Aren't You "

Tom Petty once proudly sang about the southern accent where he came from. Well, despite Kid Goat's eastern (DC & PA) origins, that accent imbues everything about Kid Goat's excellent "These People Aren't You" CD, an exploration of roots and alternative country-leaning rock that adds up to Americana at its finest. With Matt Aquiline and Belen Pifel trading off lead singing duties, Kid Goat strikes a nifty balance over 13 guitar-driven songs that alternately rock, swing, and sway. A jangle guitar underpins the hook-filled opener, "Must Be Blind," as the duo harmonize in the best southern tradition, while on "From You," Pifel's delicate country-tinged voice, which is reminiscent of Tift Merritt's, is the perfect vehicle for an memorable, pretty tune. Elsewhere, Aquiline's voice calls to mind the breakthrough BoDeans debut LP, with songs like "Pennsylvania" and "Working World" capturing the rawness at the heart of great rock 'n' roll. All told, "These People Aren't You" is a solid debut CD for Kid Goat; one that knocks down borders in the service of terrific Americana rock.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Marc James with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Maximum Action "

Marc James' 8-song CD, "Maximum Action," is a brilliant mix of David Bowie-meets-Bryan Ferry Euro-pop that is fit for a dance club as well as for a cabaret. Relying primarily on ambient, synth-infused soundscapes, James delivers wry, clever, and funny lyrics with an arch delivery invoking a dapper rogue completely unaware of his obviousness. The lead track, "The Perfect Stranger," captures this most effectively with a dry but melodic vocal in full seductive mode. "Hard Driving Music" rides a bouncing disco-like bass-line in a tuneful exercise that is pure schmaltz ("Do you want to swing, to dance, and sway to that hard driving rocking and rolling") - and is absolutely irresistible. On "Tribute to Marilyn" (yes, Monroe) James references Ray Davies' classic "Celluloid Heroes" with a straight-faced ingenuousness that is as subversive as it is catchy. Closing the album as strongly as it begins, "You Have A Secret" is built on a classic doo-**** chord progression that becomes transformed by a breathy, understated narrative (a la Leonard Cohen), and embellished by a solemn and perfect background chorus. In the end, Marc James' "Maximum Action" CD is that rare intriguing album by an artist that will win you over with his lush, melodic accessibility.

RadioIndy is pleased to present the archimedian pOiNt with a GrIndie Award for the CD "genre specific"

RadioIndy is pleased to present the archimedian pOiNt with a GrIndie Award for the CD "genre specific"

"genre specific" is a most curious title for the debut 6-song CD by, the archimedian pOiNt, because within its rocking but accessible grooves are the kind of stylistic shifts that render such labels as metal, progressive rock, thrash, or post grunge simply inadequate. Yes, "genre specific" can boast tasteful and well-executed excursions into these more or less identifiable genres, but such exclamations are carried only in service of the song, and never as superfluous window dressing. Promoting an agenda of social consciousness and global awareness, songs like "Overdrive" & "Relic" rock with fierce - and classic hard rock (think Rush, Fugazzi, System of a Down) intensity, while the mix of acoustic guitar with sampled George W. Bush speechifyin' in "Hubris" recalls nothing less than G'n'R-like grandeur. But in the languid lead vocal of "Nemesis Domesticus" an echo of Kurt Cobain gives way to the sonic charge of thundering guitar riffs that Led Zeppelin began perfecting four decades ago. All in all, the CD "genre specific" by, the archimedian pOiNt, is a very promising blast of rock bravado from an undersized behemoth (it's a 2-man group) with hard rocking roots.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Refracture with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Left For Dead Ep "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Refracture with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Left For Dead Ep "

House music is a mystifyingly multitude of Electronica / Dance music with numerous degrees of specialization and nuances. Beats Per Minute (BPM), textural definition and use / non-use of vocals are but a few of the defining characteristics that divide such subgenres of House as Dirty House, French House, and Electro House. Refracture's 3-song CD EP, "Left for Dead," blends elements of different subgenres - most notably Electro House - meaning, the music has the requisite BPM's, is anchored by propulsive bass lines, and features the sonic balance / blend associated with the House styles. All 3 tracks are catchy, infectious, and danceable as all get-out (i.e., very danceable indeed!). The title track, "Left for Dead" kicks things off with a slow-build synth swirl that hesitates before exploding into an irresistible groove punctuated by sonic squeaks and squalls that drop out of nowhere, keeping the mix continuously fresh. "Space Riot" and "Energy Flow" are both more immediate and insistent, but no less engaging, and each makes a case for being the best of the 3 mixes on the CD. If you're a House music connoisseur you will make up your own mind about the House attributes and qualifications of Refracture's "Left for Dead" EP, but if you're an Electronica music fan I think you'll find this CD delivers where it counts: on the dance floor.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Emilio Palame Band with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Be Who You Are "

Urbane and sophisticated, Emilio Palame Band's "Be Who You Are" CD is a smart collection of contemporary R&B trading funk grooves with interludes of traditional jazz piano spread over 23 tracks of pure musicality. Boasting influences that range from the lyricism of Billy Strayhorn to the dynamism of Earth, Wind & Fire; "Be Who You Are" is a throwback to an era when musical prowess trumped the constraints of genres and target audiences. On "Runaway" the Palame band invokes a subtle Latin vibe that recalls Chicago (the group), while the brilliant pianism on "Emily's Dancing Eyes" is but a backdrop to an R&B workout showcasing the bands elastic and nuanced dexterity. Where "Piano Prelude to We Are Love" finds pianist Palame beautifully exploring the richness of Bill Evans-like jazz piano, the electric keys of the full-band version of "We Are Love" swing it in a Stevie Wonder-like direction that smoothly melds the background chorus in grand harmonic convergence. The charged and dynamic "New Day" gives this amazing band a chance to flex its considerable muscle revealing, if nothing else, how the 1-2 punch of great charts in the hands of polished musicians can unlock the oft-hidden depths a song contains. But whether it's straight-up funk, '70's-grounded R&B, or the classically melodic jazz at the heart of Emilio Palame's artistry, "Be Who You Are" is a CD that succeeds because it pays tribute to its influences by invigorating the artistry that fueled them.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Doug Swindell with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Big Blue Sky"

Doug Swindell presents an outstanding collection of rich and soulful blues with a jagged-edge taste of rock on his recent release "Big Blue Sky." Swindell is a one-man band whose talents shine through, as he not only wrote these memorable pieces but also performed each track. His melodic vocals are strong and solid and the lyrics are heartfelt with tales of life and love. Not only will you hear blues on this album, but there are some country-embellished songs, like "Dead Man Walkin." On the title track "Big Blue Sky," Swindell makes all the right moves with his soulful bluesy guitar and slow and steady drums. "Train of Thought" with its rock-solid beat, has some great power chords on guitar with an ambiance that will leave listeners grooving all night long. Doug Swindell's "Big Blue Sky" is well worth hearing, especially if you like some down home blues with a tang of rock and country.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Vick Allen with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Truth Be Told... "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Vick Allen with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Truth Be Told... "

Sequencing a full-length CD is an art unto itself and the best kept secret to making a solid album. As important as it is to stack strong tracks near the beginning of an album, it's often those last one or two songs that make the difference in getting a listener to come back again and again. R&B hit- maker, Vick Allen, and his newest CD "Truth Be Told…" is an 11-song Urban / R&B treasure, and is a perfect example of getting it right. Opening with the appropriately titled "I'm Hooked," an up tempo, Al Green-like groove punctuated by Memphis-style horn bursts, Allen sets the tone for the diverse platter of R&B that follows. "You Stay On My Mind" is an inspired piece of infectious Southern Soul, while "Forbidden Love Affair" finds Allen revealing his inner R. Kelly; and "As Long As I Got My Baby" serves up a dash of funk, it is followed by the completely contemporary soul of "I Know You Got a Man." Regardless of style, though, "Truth Be Told…" is seamless and cohesive, linked as it were by inventive and smart arrangements, superb musicianship, and the kind of background vocals that defines great Urban music and, of course, Allen's smooth high tenor, a voice that alternately echoes Green, as well as lesser known R&B luminaries like Eddie Kendricks, Tyrone Davis or Howard Tate. But it's the CD closer, "That's Heaven to Me", a solemn and uplifting Sam Cooke cover with the kind of message and melody Stevie Wonder later perfected on songs like "Heaven Help Us All" that seals the deal and will ensure repeated listens. Sequenced for maximum effect and filled with classic R&B grooves from beginning to end, Vick Allen's "Truth Be Told…" CD is a terrific album and a welcome addition to the Soul field.

What do you get when you cross blues with rock? An interesting CD called "Blue Heaven" by the talented trio, Todd Bailey, Jean Claude Guillem, & Celine Guillem. This group offers a nice array of tunes with likable melodies and catchy beats. Kicking off the CD, "Just A Little" powers up with solid vocals, flavorful guitar, and a catchy bass riff. The strong and powerful guitar on "Master Fender" sounds as if it's really "singing" the blues with a soulful attitude. The female vocals on "Je Par En Voyage" and "J'AVAIS Mis De Cote" are beautifully soft and silky and provide highlights of the CD, as they are well-complemented by the impressive skills of this group of musicians. Take a flashback to the '70's with "Guitar Disco" with its funky beats and grooving guitars. "Blue Heaven" is splashed with a lively collection of bluesy rock and is well worth hearing.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Amelia Coffey with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Uriel's Passage "

Amelia Coffey has the right idea of how animals can inspire warm and inviting melodies with her New Age Jazz instrumental disc, "Uriel's Passage." Coffey has taken her love for animals and has artistically composed and performed these charming songs of peaceful mood music. "Dolphin Play" is stunning with a nice dynamic balance between the electric piano and flute while the melody sweetly flows with ease. Delicate and dreamy, the titled track, "Uriel's Passage" is serene with the flute playing with heartfelt emotions while guitar gracefully accompanies with soft broken chord progressions. Picture yourself standing in a lush, green meadow of Ireland with the wind gently blowing a warm summer breeze through your hair with the sounds of the ocean and birds singing, as you hear a beautiful rendition of "Danny Boy" performed ever so gracefully on the flute. RadioIndy is pleased to present Rick Parnell with a GrIndie Award for the CD "One Eye Open "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Rick Parnell with a GrIndie Award for the CD "One Eye Open "

Despite the almost lo-fi, demo-like feel of Rick Parnell's "One Eye Open" CD, the strong 6-song debut from this Canadian singer-songwriter has a primal immediacy often filtered out of big-budget, major label projects. And that's good. What Parnell offers are six stripped-down, completely engaging contemporary folk songs featuring his sometimes raspy vocals over the sparest of guitar strumming. In its directness and simple arrangements "One Eye Open" recalls Bon Iver's breakthrough in '08 as well as the songs and performances of such troubadours as Richard Buckner or Jeff Buckley. But Parnell is an original, and on tuneful songs like "Everybody's Wrong" and "I'm Coming Home" his rough-hewn voice is as evocative as the words that spill out in his soulful delivery. "Come Saturday," has a bit more edge, thanks to a slyly subdued slide accompaniment, but it is no less pleasing, and the last track, "One More Song" offers just the right touch of melancholy to close the CD. Rick Parnell's "One Eye Open" CD is a cross-generational work that owes a debt to classic singer-songwriter stylists, but is also completely right for contemporary listeners of any generation.

RadioIndy is pleased to present NOE with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Nostra Orchestra Estemporanea "

When you hear the word orchestra, one would think there is a full ensemble of musical performers dressed in formal attire playing from eloquently scored pieces. This is not the case as NOE has taken "orchestra" to a new level with their latest disc "Nostra Orchestra Estemporanea." To truly appreciate this CD you must listen with an open mind and soul as it is creatively embedded with Avant Garde/free improvisational selections. Disregarding the rigid genres and forms of traditional music, "Prima Estemporanea Per Grande Orchestra" captures tones from the string section to winds with a sense of harmonious sync. Exploring unexpected sound textures, "Estemporanea Per Voce E Strumenti" displays modernism with new techniques and possibilities of the voice and instruments which has a cohesive appeal. The selections on this disc are experimental and innovating. Because there are no rules on this CD, the end result will capture your interest and attention. RadioIndy is pleased to present Identity Crisis with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Mosaic "

Mosaic is defined as "a combination of diverse elements forming a more or less coherent whole." Identity Crisis and their CD "Mosaic," is appropriately titled as this collection of varying styles tells a love story through numerous musical genres. With both male and female vocals, the album has a refreshing inconsistency that's bound to keep you engaged. "The Idea of You" takes a Bossa Nova approach, putting the listener in an elegant surrounding but don't get too comfortable; "Best of Yourself" captures a smoky bar ambiance through an 8-bar blues number. The harmonies are spectacular as you will hear on songs such as "Beyond." There are horns, harmonica, harmony, and solid and concrete musicianship that hold it all in place. These musicians have formed a strong and sound connection and the chemistry between them is brilliant. The password is "Mosaic," come on in.

Mary Paulson has compiled a beautiful blend of soft rock ballads with influences of country and blues on her latest disc, "Ballads & Blues." Paulson is quite a talented singer as her vocals are clean and polished with fine clarity. She seamlessly transitions from one style to another, showing impressive versatility. RadioIndy is pleased to present Sue Quigley with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Perfect Chaos"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Sue Quigley with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Perfect Chaos"

"Perfect Chaos," Sue Quigley's latest CD, is a polished continuation of this fine Seattle-bred singer-songwriter's exploration of traditional and classic female rock forms. This time around, though, the acoustic guitars are a little more pronounced and the rhythms less insistent, but the hooks are no less engaging and Quigley's resonant voice still squeezes every last drop of blood from her songs' intricate veins. And rich veins they are. "Fallen World" masterfully blends a syncopated rhythm to a sonorous cello in a moving bid for hope and redemption, while the melodic "Paper Tiger" languorous vocal belies the rage smoldering barely under the surface. "Picture in a Drawer" and "She's Not Talking to You" are nifty mid-tempo numbers reminiscent of female rock forebears like Johnette Napolitano, Sass Jordan, or Patty Smyth. But on the album's stripped down ballads - such as the closer, "How It's Going to Be," with it's demo-like vocal and acoustic guitar-only performance – or the moving "Yours to Say," Quigley reveals the softer edges of a fiercely independent artist to best effect. All told, "Perfect Chaos" is a terrific alternative pop/rock-oriented CD and a fine addition to Sue Quigley's growing and noteworthy canon.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Skip Mahoney and The Casuals with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Chocolate Brides Theme Song"

Layered, smooth-as-chocolate-silk harmonies are the order of the day on Skip Mahoney and the Casuals' 5-track CD, "Chocolate Brides Theme Song," an impeccable R&B ballad as old school as it is modern. Romantic and affirmative, and timeless in its celebration of love and marriage, "Chocolate Brides" is - as its name implies, a unique and soulful paean to the 21st century African-American bride. Delivering five different remixes, Skip Mahoney & the Casuals offer one performance specifically tailored to the old school crowd, another featuring the vocal group S.O.L.E. that's geared to the contemporary R&B fan, one with S.O.L.E.'s neo-soul flourishes, plus two instrumental versions perfect for the dance floor. On all three of the vocal renditions, however, Mahoney's splendid tenor and flights of falsetto proves the perfect foil for group harmonies that recall such R&B stalwarts as The O'Jays or The Spinners. As each generation produces its own particular wedding songs, Skip Mahoney and the Casuals' CD, "Chocolate Brides Theme Song," just might be the perfect wedding disc for the contemporary African-American couple wanting to add a special – chocolate – flavor to their nuptials.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Jerad Finck with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Jerad Finck"

Jerad Finck's self-titled debut CD is a 12-song showcase for a newcomer with the discerning instincts of a pop-rock veteran. Whether delivering frantic, insistent rockers like "Another" or achingly delicate ballads "Movin' On," the CD is a model of pop balance and rock fire. While several tracks benefit from nuanced and deftly-charted string arrangements, the driving rhythm of "You" and the blistering guitar solo of "Whatever You Want" ensure that the rock in pop-rock gets its due. And with hooks as big as the great outdoors, combined with a solid, in-the-pocket rhythm section, "Jerad Finck" shows a power-pop sensibility that would make The Knack proud. Check out Finck's bold and utterly contemporary arrangement of "Paperback Writer" and you get a sense not only of Jared's craftsmanship, but also of the singer-songwriter's artistic confidence. RadioIndy is pleased to present Robin Horlock with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Music."

Robin Horlock's aptly titled third CD; "Music." is an 11-song collection of tuneful, well-constructed songs that reflect the singer's Adult Contemporary experiences to great effect. Noted for the relaxed but soulful passion in his vocals, Horlock delivers hook-filled, guitar-based tunes with the ease and capability of a Jack Johnson or John Mayer, but without surrendering his own considerable uniqueness. Employing extremely tasteful blends of acoustic and electric fretwork throughout, "Music." highlights consist of Adult Contemporary gems that showcase styles ranging from California-style soft rock "Here & Now" to post-Eagles Don Henley pop-rock "Everything Falls Apart." On "The Difference Between Day and Night" Horlock even seems to channel the '70's-era voice of John Sebastian, while "Life Goes On" features spare but distinctly affective sax lines to flesh out a stirring anthem of hope. Simply put, "Music." is another strong CD from an artist whose instincts for savvy and smart adult pop are spot-on.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Ari Inkiläinen with a GrIndie Award for the CD "The Shine (Lumi&Stars mix)"

Ari Inkiläinen and his latest release, "The Shine (Lumi&Stars mix)," will bring listeners of the electronica scene to their feet. As a composer, Inkilainen has a talent for finding the right sounds and rhythms tailored for the club scene. Using sounds that are driven from synths and drum machines is no easy task, as the composer must play each track with precise timing and control to create the final song. You can hear the multi-layering Inkiläinen has embedded within this song with different types of synth string effects, while the drums keep a steady and solid beat. There is also a dynamic balance between the sounds as each string effect stands out as it takes the solo. The melody is catchy as it loops around with sounds that are vibrant and lively. Fans of Moby or Vangelis will thoroughly enjoy Ari Inkiläinen's "The Shine (Lumi&Stars mix)" with its club scene sounds and grooving beats.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Thomas Donovan with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Xtended.dance"

Thomas Donovan's latest CD, "Xtended.dance," furthers the prolific Electronica artist's exploration of synth-pop dance music. On this 8-song offering, only the lead track (and single) "Pump Up the Love" is entirely new, as the rest of the disc is comprised of remixes of club favorites, "Colour," Calling Around the World," "Trapped," and "Total Controller." "Pump Up the Love," though, like "Trapped" or "Colour," evokes as well the hook-centric quality of UK-style Top 40 pop to fine effect. "Total Controller," in fact, offers up a rousing sing-along chorus not unlike The Killers' "Somebody Told Me." Throughout "Xtended.dance," Donovan demonstrates an uncanny knack for affecting the perfect vocal touch as his supple and emotive voice bends, swoops, and glides over synth-drenched Electronica that makes this CD as Top 40-worthy as it is danceable.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Black Dog Syndrome with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Isolate the Cue"

Like playing a long-misplaced album by Americana / Roots Rock stalwarts, NRBQ, Black Dog Syndrome's debut CD, "Isolate the Cue" is at once both familiar and bracingly new. Over the course of 12 original tracks "Isolate the Cue" explores the myriad of secluded and obscure estuaries that make up the best of Americana; that is, the kind of smart and provocative elements of rock, R&B, blues, jazz, and other Southern influences that fires the imagination. In the biting sax tone of lead track "Hungry Dog," the incendiary guitar of "Driving With Her Knees," and the imagery-rich lyrics of "Steps of Hell," a listener hears the components that made artists like The Bottle Rockets, B-52's, Firewater and Southern Culture on the Skids so original and compelling. Eleven of the songs feature Kirk Ridge's corrosive vocals to deliver taut and acerbic tales from America's back roads, while co-lead vocalist Kimmie Wilson takes the helm on the engaging "Wounded," offering up the kind of sing-along melodicism of Tom Petty's finest work. Co-produced by legendary engineer Mitch Easter, Black Dog Syndrome's "Isolate the Cue" is that kind of intriguing debut CD that's sure to satisfy.

"He Doesn't Like Me… (He Likes My Brother)," the new CD-single from accomplished dance-pop songstress Kim Esty, is a delicious slice of Electronica worthy of the singer's clear affinity for the genre's queen bee, Madonna. Boasting 7 different remixes (by Whisper Twins vs SBD and Dr. Octavo Versace), "He Doesn't Like Me…" – in all its permutations, is as catchy as it is danceable. Esty's multi-layered vocals soaring over the thrust of the programmed beats creates a sonic wash perfect for the dance floor. And tossing off the clever hook line like a straight-faced Kirsty MacColl only adds to the fun. RadioIndy is pleased to present The Paul Cook Project with a GrIndie Award for the CD "The Paul Cook Project"

RadioIndy is pleased to present The Paul Cook Project with a GrIndie Award for the CD "The Paul Cook Project"

The inescapable lesson learned by Susan Boyle's meteoric rise to international YouTube fame is that singing talent is not the exclusive domain of attractive, expertly-coiffed 20-somethings belting out staid and redundant songs for a TV audience of musical reactionaries. The recently released disc, "The Paul Cook Project" is an album of original songs performed by various (unknown) singers from Abilene, Texas, drives that lesson home over the course of 15 tuneful, well-crafted, and meaning-filled songs that ache with sincerity and positivism. From the lush-pop strains of "Making Memories" to the contemporary country pulse of the Anytown, USA, narrative, "Light It Up"; from the self-empowerment piano ballad "I Can Win" to the inspirational strains of "Our Time," "The Paul Cook Project" melds a diversity of musical forms in a cohesive collection, thanks mainly to Cook's unerring knack for accessible and memorable melodies. Underscoring the entire CD is a solemn sense of Christian faith (made overt on songs such as, "Don't Run Away" and "Fruit of the Spirit"), but the spirituality is inclusive, not heavy-handed or preachy. "The Paul Cook Project" is a very listenable, fun (check out the Roger Miller-like ditty, "I Do What I Do") uplifting and, most of all, engaging CD of well-conceived, well-played & (gasp!) well-sung songs by the guy next door and an anonymous – but talented, community of singers.

Juniper's recently released album "Crazy Love" delivers an edgy and original showcase of alternative rock music. Right from the first track, "You Rock My World," the drum beats pulse subtly into your soul while the strong and solid guitar plays driving riffs. The strong and emotive lead vocals on the title track "Crazy Love" are reminiscent of the popular female vocalist Alanis Morissette. Vocals throughout this album are melodic and mysterious, which gives way to the interesting and sometimes cryptic lyrics. There is a great amount of creativity, as each instrument presents a certain depth to the songs. "This Is My Job" and "I Like Solitude But Not Long" features piano that adds to the hypnotic tones. Juniper also balances the music with a variety of electronic sound effects that complement these well-crafted songs. This album features a diverse selection of talented local/international artists who perform their songs with powerful and invigorating energy. The entire album is compiled of rap vocals, and each rapper exhibits their easy-flowing rhymes. The track titled "Move It," by Ra-man Ft Miki, features a smooth rapping style. The lyrics throughout the album tend to be explicit and contain adult language and themes, as listeners will hear on songs such as "Get Em" and "Bring Tha Heat," but it doesn't interfere with the talent versatility these artists display. Original and artistic use of synth and percussive sounds are heard on each track while the piano on "Lonely Dayz" has a sort of mysterious feel. RadioIndy is pleased to present Monkey Bones with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Television "

Monkey Bones and their debut CD, "Television" is an all-out rock attack of blazing guitars, impassioned vocals, biting lyrics, and the rock-solid kind of playing to bring it all home. Buoyed by a big beat-infused rhythm section firing on all cylinders, "Television" features 12 original songs that rarely let up. But despite an almost relentless fury, The Monkey Bones deftly balance many of their riff-heavy songs with effective and at times, subtle background vocals that add dimension and nuance to a style not always noted for such attributes. Notably, "Sunny Rays" shows the band can deliver the arena rock ballad as needed while "Hammer Comin' Down" offers up a rich vein of Southern Rock swagger. Delivered with a snarl & bravado as fitting as it is emblematic, the casually thrown out line "it's all fair in love and rock & roll" in the CD's closer, "Cross-Eyed," is more than a fair summary of "Television," it's a veritable battle cry.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Oriana LaRusso with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Oriana's Opiphany"

"Oriana's Opiphany," the second released CD from Oriana LaRusso, is a smart and contemporary collection of dance-pop tunes by a young singer with the poise and polish of a seasoned vet. LaRusso's sometimes sultry and smoky voice plays off a synth and beat-laden soundtrack in a way that is often original and compelling. On the ballad, "More Time," she shows remarkable control at the lower register of her voice while on the R&B-drenched "Not Anymore" she commands the middle register like a love-weary chanteuse. The bulk of the CD sports a predominantly Urban / Top 40 dance feel with LaRusso not only up to the material but leading it with a heady confidence. If at times you hear echoes of Madonna ("Pass Me By") or Shakira ("Watch Me"), or even J-Lo ("Standing Still in Love"), one realizes the lofty aspirations the singer has set for herself. To its credit, "Oriana's Opiphany" is a fine showcase for a singer with not only ambition, but talent as well.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Hijirah Kem with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Up Against My Soul"

Hijirah Kem's album, "Up Against My Soul," is an eclectic and edgy electronica experience. Kem describes herself as a "multi-media artist" who utilizes high-tech compositional collaging as her instrument and formula for channeling creativity. The music is complex in its individual and collective layering yet the elements mesh, creating a futuristic sound that gels. "Sand in my Head" includes an almost droning tone, created by a digital wind instrument that exudes an enticing and mysterious ambiance. "Chasing Wormholes" is a perfect title for the final song as resonating synths fall into rubble and re-emerge reborn. The album carries its own inertia and remains engaging through the end. Go on an escapade with Hijirah Kem and her latest disc, "Up Against My Soul," she'll show you the way.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Bold Monkey with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Another Way to Say Human Race"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Bold Monkey with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Another Way to Say Human Race"

Bold Monkey's, "Another Way to Say Human Race," CD is a collection of contemporary folk songs from a singer-songwriter with a keen and well-honed sense of song craft and the voice to put them over. Employing only the sparest of guitar phrasing, Bold Monkey achieves a stripped-down, open mic coffeehouse intimacy to showcase compelling songs full of wry and incisive observations. Recalling the wordplay of an Elvis Costello or Joe Henry on songs such as "If You're Lucky" and "Enlightenment Is In Question," Bold Monkey's Dylan Joshua Edmiston successfully navigates the demands of the nowhere-to-hide song arrangements with a deft touch. On the Dylan-esquely titled, "Navigably Subsequent," comparisons to Costello is also deserved for the constricted and breathy vocal delivery that snakes in and out of light-as-air guitar fills and tastefully understated vibes accompaniment. While "Another Way to Say Human Race" is utterly contemporary in approach and sensibility, Bold Monkey's fine CD nevertheless resonates with the timelessness that true craftsmanship always renders.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Cardona with a GrIndie Award for the CD "You’ll Like It"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Cardona with a GrIndie Award for the CD "You'll Like It"

Cardona's CD, "You'll Like It" employs synthesizer, echo, some propulsive drumming and, on the opening title track, a jazzy dollop of electric piano, to push the dance-centric and uptown-leaning musical agenda of Brooklyn performer, Joe Cardona. This three song disc verily smacks of unbuttoned satin shirts, garish medallions, and dance floors ablaze under flashing club lights as Cardona croons in an almost drone-like and atonal - but loosely melodic, voice about the everyday "give and take" that is modern urban life. Eschewing deeply meaningful or profound lyrics, "You'll Like It" boasts the kinds of street-tough brashness of a testosterone-fueled Brooklyn club-crawler. For instance, on the title track, Cardona warbles, "the more you lick, the more you'll taste…and the more you'll like it," while on the unsentimental "Shut Up Baby," he refuses to pull any punches, singing "shut up, shut up, baby." Made for the dance floor by an artist with the milieu that fires his muse, the CD "You'll Like It" is a well played, well produced, multi-sonic exploration of the urban experience that is sure to inspire more than just booty-shaking.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Zhonray with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Ultimate I & B"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Zhonray with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Ultimate I & B"

The 70's ushered in a genre – soft rock, to take the place that easy listening once described: relaxed, polished and melodious music for adults who preferred their background music comfortably familiar. The soft rock moniker eventually gave way to adult contemporary but the aesthetic remained the same. "Ultimate I & B," a veritable "best of" CD (compiled from 3 previous albums) by Zhonray is a fine example of this genre, reminding listeners of adult contemporary finest practitioners (Air Supply, Seals & Crofts, America, etc) without losing its own identity. Lush synthesizer flourishes on "In the Shadow of Fallen Love," while Zhonray delivers spare and tasteful guitar fills such as the Spanish guitar runs on "Golden Sands." Take note of the subtle conga interpolations on "Blossom Hill," or relax to the sounds of nature on "Summer Rain," or even a hint of Chris Isaaks-like tremolo guitar "Shine Your Smile on Me." Zhonray swathes its sedate tunes of the trials and triumphs of love and romance on their "Ultimate I & B" CD in arrangements that go down like the proverbial taste of honey.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Roy Jay with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Lucky Guy"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Roy Jay with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Lucky Guy"

Who said you can't judge a book or CD by its cover? Roy Jay's debut album "Lucky Guy" embodies the relaxed beach tone feeling depicted in his cover artwork. There are twists on this traditional upbeat folk music throughout this disc with tracks like "In and Out of Dreams" where hand-percussion and acoustic guitar are complimented by harmonious background vocals with sing along style. Although mostly leaning towards lighter atmospheres, "Time's Page," takes a ballad approach where subtlety and style come into play nicely. The musicianship is sophisticated and mature, but Jay doesn't take himself too seriously during "Prettiest Girl in Wal-Mart" with a comical trip to the super-store. Get out your sun block as "Lucky Guy" is Americana wrapped up in a beach towel and ready to hit the sand.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Black Lung Bandits with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Bandaids on Bullet Wounds"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Black Lung Bandits with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Bandaids on Bullet Wounds"

From the infectious opening track, "It's Just Our Way," by original and innovating artists Black Lung Bandits, they establish a coalition of genres on their album "Bandaids on Bullet Wounds." The first track kicks off with an organic four on the floor pulse, balanced with dirty guitar interjections, and baritone vocal twang. There are songs with hard syncopated rhythms and riffs such as "On the Verge of a Good Feeling" or "The Girl from Iwo Jima" later juxtaposed by a more folk-infused approach, hip-hop rhyming, and even mariachi. One such example of this creativity is "Another Place" with edgy guitars, Middle Eastern tonality, and rapping rhymes. Saying that Black Lung Bandits are eclectic would be an understatement as they have originality and pull off the diversity of these genres. "Bandaids on Bullet Wounds" is a disc well worth hearing with the unique and fresh sounds of hard core rock, a touch of folk and rhyming hip-hop.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Alan Curtis with a GrIndie Award for the CD "More Than I Can Be"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Alan Curtis with a GrIndie Award for the CD "More Than I Can Be"

On his first solo album, "More Than I Can Be," Alan Curtis blends an array of roots rock influences with creative arrangements. The CD opens with "Ten in Heaven," a retro allusion that could lend itself to the likes of Brian Wilson or The Traveling Wilbury's while not swaying too left of contemporary. Through vocally driven songs, Curtis establishes his unique character while also keeping the layering fresh and engaging throughout. With a heartfelt piano ballad as heard on the title track "More Than I Can Be" followed by dance inducing beats, Curtis's love for rock n roll is lucid in each song. Feel the driving drum beats on "Greed (Money, Money, Money)" while vocals belt out melodic lyrics and the organ holds solid chord progressions. RadioIndy is pleased to present The Moon Whispers with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Pearl of Blood "

RadioIndy is pleased to present The Moon Whispers with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Pearl of Blood "

Cryptic poetry and dark images are the forte of The Moon Whispers as they release their latest album "Pearl of Blood." The fusion between folk music and despondent ambiance is quite interesting and adds to the uniqueness this album displays. Vocalist/guitarist Elisa Di Napoli has a deep, yet touch of sweetness to her voice. Her lyrics are strong and emotional, with each song having a story to tell. This quality enhances the range of music that is reminiscent of darker tones and textures. One such song with a thought provoking tale is "You're Driving Me Crazy." Another appealing quality is the use of viola and cello giving sinister overtones to these ballads. "Do It Again Sam" is just one song featuring the obscure strings answering in shadowy minor tones. If folk music with mysterious and stirring images is your pleasure, then the Moon Whispers' "Pearl of Blood" is well worth hearing.

Jaco Pastorius would be proud to hear the bass chops of jazz artist Alessandro Bottura. His latest record, "Morning Grooves" is a smooth fusion of rock, jazz, and pop instrumentals all rolled into one amazing sound. Bottura's bass playing speaks for itself and is immediately evident right from the opening track, "Out of Sight." His jazz fueled bass runs fly up and down the neck and are nicely driven by some outstanding guitar/drum work. Bottura changes gears a bit and slow things down on "Sweet Tears," which also highlights his staccato playing skills. RadioIndy is pleased to present Rock Child with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Ten "

Rock Child's CD "Ten" is embedded with guitar-driven, hard core rock and roll. Reaching well beyond these roots, this group captures an edgy hard rock style using driving, distorted rock guitar riffs overlaid with melodic vocals. This is definitely a turn-up-the-volume classic rock CD with an edgy, raw sound. The album takes you on a journey of happiness and sorrow fused with poetic lyrics. "When the Sun is Coming Down" is a great example of this as the music is mysterious in tonality adding to the obscurity on this track. A powerful guitar intro leads us into the track "An Anticipation" leaving the listener wanting to hear more. If you're a fan of classic hard rock bands such as Black Sabbath then "Ten" is an album well worth checking out.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Stevan Pasero with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Jambossa "

RadioIndy is pleased to present Stevan Pasero with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Jambossa "

The amazing finger style talents of guitarist Stevan Pasero are undeniable on his latest effort, "Jambossa." The record, an eclectic mix of jazz, flamenco, classical, Brazilian, and tango, also offers listeners some tasty covers to boot. For starters, Pasero takes his aim on Van Morrison's classic "Moondance" and the outcome is brilliant. You also have to listen to his cover of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," it is pretty remarkable. Pasero transforms this classic rock epic into a bouncy, Latin pop song with a jazz infused shuffle, light years away from the original recording. Don't let the covers make you forget just how exceptional a guitarist Pasero is, his talent is superb and his soloing shines through on tracks like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." RadioIndy is pleased to present Milestone with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Medley"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Milestone with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Medley"

Easy listening instrumentals are abounding on Milestone's newest record, "Medley." Although the album does have faint hints of 1980's tones (i.e. Philip Glass), the record is quite contemporary and a good listen as well. The opening track, "Towards the Unknown," sets the overall mood and gives a taste of what's to come. A wall of synthesizers and pianos make up most of these rainy day numbers and are sometimes highlighted by some nice guitar fills. A great example of this would be on "In the Memory of Heroes" and "Half-way Behind." Milestone has done a terrific job in choosing the instrumentation wisely as this paints the tone color pallet that "Medley" offers up. This album is a great buy for anyone wanting some relaxing tunes to de-stress to or is just looking for some top notch instrumental music.

Gary Lee Tolley is all over the board on his latest record, "Tybee Tyme." Although most of the tracks have that Jimmy Buffet beach flare to them, there are also some nice hints of country and Irish sounds on the album. The seaside themes are most fitting on songs like "Tybee Island" and "I've Got Mexico." Listen to any one of these tracks and you'll swear you're sitting on the sand listening to the waves rolling in. Tolley also features a cover of the Righteous Brothers classic, "Unchained Melody," a song which Gary performs with his own style and grace. Harry Smyer is a talent that we hope will be heard by the whole world soon enough. His record, "In Season Songs for the Sin Sick Soul," is a tasty mix of 50's soul and southern gospel. Although each song is spiritually themed, this shouldn't stop you from giving this record a good chance if that genre isn't your thing. Smyer's vocals are steeped in the sounds of Sam & Dave or Eddie Kendricks, which is no easy feat. Whether it's "Walk Around Heaven All Day" or "I Got Something Within Me," Smyer consistently delivers a fine performance and will make you wish he was preaching down the street from your house. There is also a beautiful classic gospel cover, "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," which he eloquently puts his own stamp on. The blues/rock band, E.Z. Riders, have released a throwback to the days of Humble Pie with their latest effort, "Experienced Zydeco Riders." Their sound is primarily country, but the choices of instrumentation really throws each song in a different direction. For instance, "Shamrock Bar" has the classic pedal steel sound which is very much associated with country, but it is played more in a Hawaiian/Slack key form with a tropical drum groove underneath. RadioIndy is pleased to present Jenuine J.A. with a GrIndie Award for the CD "The Burden of Proof"

Jenuine J.A.'s latest rap record "The Burden of Proof" is a great throwback to the early sounds of that genre. Jenuine isn't exactly a hip-hop artist as his songs rely more on his lyrics and the instrumentation than just beats. The opening track, "Dyin' to Floss" says it all, as you can hear how Jenuine wants his words to be heard and not lost under a sea of electronic drums. His struggle to be heard is evident throughout the disc as he lets listeners in on his personal hurdles in becoming a successful rap star. Just listen to "What's Your Plan?" and you will feel what he has gone through. The title of "The (Lost) Art of Storytellin'" is a truthful statement about where most rap songs are at today. RadioIndy is pleased to present Howce Clemens with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Each Lifetime Is A Voyage"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Howce Clemens with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Each Lifetime Is A Voyage"

Howce Clemens brilliantly fuses the sounds of pop, rock, and R&B on his new EP, titled "Each Lifetime Is A Voyage." Clemens' voice throughout the entire album has a musky Johnny Cash vibe to it. That country vocal tone shines through on numbers like "Please Take Care" and "Little Darlin'." Taking a nod from another rocker band fused with country, the Eagles, Clemens delivers a wonderful piece of music with the title track, "Each Lifetime Is a Voyage." The vocal harmonies in the chorus and complementing instrumentation give this track a happy, lighthearted feel. Howce Clemens' "Each Lifetime Is a Voyage" is a great album for any Johnny Cash or Eagles fan looking for a new and fantastic set of tunes.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Ray William Roldan with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Where We Come From"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Ray William Roldan with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Where We Come From"

If Tom Petty ever went full-on country, then it would most likely sound something like Ray William Roldan's latest effort "Where We Come From." Roldan does a terrific job fusing country with pop-riddled vocal melodies and honky-tonk guitar riffs. There are some typical, yet well played country moments on this disc, particularly on songs like "My Country Rocks" and "Cowboy Cadillac." However, what make this album shine are tunes like "Back to Texas," which strongly resemble some of the later Traveling Wilburys work. Another nod to that sound comes by way of Roldan's vocals which emulate Jeff Lynne and cult country legend J.J. Cale. Ray William Roldan's "Where We Come From" is a very enjoyable disc whether you are a diehard country fan and/or love that Americana/pop style.

His vocals are right on the mark and capture the essence of this style of music. "Plenty Enough to Go Around" and "Take What You Need" equally show off the funky and bluesy side of this album. There is also a nice melodic guitar riff on "Wasting the Day Away", with its catchy rhythmic run. Koval has a special talent for making his lyrics fun, as is heard on the song "Alien To Me." Fans of Joe Walsh will definitely appreciate "Drives It Home", a fun CD with energetic rock tunes and rock solid guitar solos.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Carol of Harvest with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Ty I Ja"

Carol of Harvest soothes the soul with its newest disc of European pop, "Ty I Ja." Composer and original Carol of Harvest band member Axel Schmierer provides the songwriting for this relaxing disc of dreamy acoustic jazz and pop. His technique is well-represented in songs like "Ty I Ja" and "In Between", a song which also features some tasty lead guitar work. The most notable impression left on listeners is the voice of Polish singer Ewa, whose voice is very refined and angelic. Her vocal performances alone are worth the money for this disc. Be sure to check out the song "Nagi" for one of her finer vocal performances. If pop music fused with an international flair is your thing, you are going to love Carol of Harvest's "Ty I Ja."

RadioIndy is pleased to present Finlay Morton with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Back to Basics 2009 Remix"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Finlay Morton with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Back to Basics 2009 Remix"

Finlay Morton takes a crop of classic rock influences and fuses them together with some country, resulting in a fine album called "Back to Basics 2009 Remix." Morton's songwriting is very similar to that of Tom Petty, with Americana flowing throughout the album and the sound of an organ whirling about. This influence is most evident on songs like "Hang On To Your Dreams" and "My Friend". The best attribute about Morton is his silky rock voice, emulating the more recent vocal tones of Pink Floyd's Roger Waters. Give "Scary Monsters" a good listen and you will hear those vocal tones similar to Waters'. There is also some nice country lap steel work on the song "Back To The Start". If you own Petty's "Wild Flowers" album or anything put out recently by Neil Young, you will love Finlay Morton's "Back to Basics 2009 Remix."

RadioIndy is pleased to present Freestone with a GrIndie Award for the CD "The Temple of Humanity"

Looking for something new and different? Then you should give a listen to the album "The Temple of Humanity" by pop/rock band Freestone. This band emulates the cosmic tones familiarized by Pink Floyd and does a great job at reproducing those sounds. "The Ancient of Days" is a mellow song, featuring talented saxophone playing that makes the instrument sound almost as if it is singing. The title track exhibits a relaxing drum beat and equally soothing vocals. The instrumentation on this disc drips of Pink Floyd, with lush synth melodies and haunting guitar work. Although the material of Freestone's "The Temple of Humanity" is rare compared to what is "standard" today, it is a great listen for any Pink Floyd fan or ancient ritual buff and should definitely be checked out.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Kelly Moon McGinnis with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Moontime"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Kelly Moon McGinnis with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Moontime"

Colorado-based songwriter Kelly Moon McGinnis delivers a one-two punch of blues and rock on his latest effort, "Moontime." McGinnis is a well-known staple in the Denver area and has opened for famed acts such as Big Head Todd & the Monsters and Leon Redbone. The most likeable thing about this album is McGinnis's vocals and the way in which he delivers them. In "Your Wishing Well," listeners get to hear his gritty singing voice, very similar to that of Tom Waits or Bob Dylan. McGinnis's songwriting also stays true to the blues roots and features some exciting guitar work as well. Another standout track is "God Is Love," which has a tropical feel to it and is very reminiscent of late 70's George Harrison work. This album is a must-have for any Waits fan or anyone who loves that nitty-gritty blues sound.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Wes and Victoria with a GrIndie Award for the CD "The Ballad Of Billy Saigon"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Wes and Victoria with a GrIndie Award for the CD "The Ballad Of Billy Saigon"

"The Ballad Of Billy Saigon" by Wes and Victoria is folk rock/Americana at its best and deserves a good listen from any fan of that genre. Originally hailing from Texas, the duo's work has that southern feel and is a great mix of folk, rock, country and good ol' cowboy music. Wes has a very unique singing voice that is particularly raw, letting you feel every note and word he is singing. The harmonica talent of Victoria is well highlighted on songs like "Trail of Tears," and it sounds great. There is also a very welcoming Rolling Stones-influenced number called "Love Got a Mind of Its Own," a song that could easily be compared to anything the Stones did in their best years. For listeners that enjoy folk rock and Bob Dylan, Wes and Victoria's "The Ballad Of Billy Saigon" is definitely worth listening to.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Lachi with a GrIndie Award for the CD"Ugly Beautiful"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Lachi with a GrIndie Award for the CD"Ugly Beautiful"

Pianist and songwriter Lachi, ornately blends the sounds of contemporary jazz with early '90's pop/rock with a wonderful result. Don't let the word jazz fool you, "Ugly Beautiful" is more of a pop record than anything else. The small hints of Diana Krall are very nice and fit well within Lachi's songwriting structure. One of those jazzy standouts is "Broke My Heart" which also highlights Lachi's talent for piano playing. The pop influences, a la Alanis Morrisette, come into play on the opening track "We Can Fly." The expression Lachi delivers when singing or speaking her lyrics and the tone of the guitars captures what was once a great time for music, the early '90's. If you are looking for something reminiscent of that period in music or just want to hear some good, female fronted piano rock, then "Ugly Beautiful" is a CD well worth hearing.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Joshua Mills with a GrIndie Award for the CD "SpiritSpa"

The piano is undoubtedly one of the most soothing instruments to calm one's nerves and musician Joshua Mills knows exactly how to do the job. His latest album of elegant piano compositions, "SpiritSpa," is not only delicate and dreamy but also a collection of wonderful piano ballads. The title says it all as this music does in fact belong in every spa across the country. His opening track, "Peaceful Soak," wraps you in beautifully written melodies very reminiscent of Billy Joel's latest work. "Ascending & Descending" is a bit darker than the rest of the album, but gives us something to listen to on one of those off days when we are all a little frustrated and need that one song that describes our day. Mills was also creative in the song names he chose as they very much reflect the ambiance of this album: "Glorious Horizon," "Fly," "Fragrant Oil," and "Heaven's Delight." Whether you just want to relax or hear some magnificent piano playing that soothes your body and soul, then "SpiritSpa" is for you.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Ramblin Dawgs with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Rockin Blues"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Ramblin Dawgs with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Rockin Blues"

The Ramblin Dawgs energetic three song EP "Rockin Blues," is full of classic 70's/80's blues tone we all love and remember. The first single, "Steppin Up" is a wonderful throw back to the sound of the Fabulous Thunderbirds with some dirty guitar work by Carlos "C-Dawg" DC. "You Let Me Down" also showcases "C-Dawg's" Clapton infused playing and lets us hear the band jam out some soulful, slow tempo blues. Closing out the three single EP is "Worse Without You," a Chicago style blues number with solid chord progressions and guitar driven riffs and solo. The band as a whole is extremely talented, but Carlos' guitar skills stand out amongst anything else on this disc and deserve to be noticed. If you like Clapton or that old school Chicago blues sound, then "Rockin Blues" is a great CD to add to your collection.

Comprised of 2 male vocalists and 1 female vocalist, Gnos-Tel-Jah offers up a psychedelic ride of Hip-Hop fused with rock and spoken word. "Midnight Swang" represents the rap side to their debut disc with easy flowing rhymes and is reminiscent of the group Outkast. When you break it all down, Rap/Hip-Hop is basically spoken words with beats underlying the phrases. The band shows their love for this genre with 13 "chapters" which are 13 separate spoken tracks. RadioIndy is pleased to present Connie Strange with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Fire…Brimstone & Love"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Connie Strange with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Fire…Brimstone & Love"

Vocalist Connie Strange whips up a fantastic album, filled with gospel, blues, country, and even the slightest touch of jazz in her newest effort, "Fire…Brimstone & Love." The lead off track states what the entire CD has to offer with "He Said," an eclectic mix of blues and gospel spreading the word of God. Strange wasn't being clever when she named the disc "Fire…Brimstone & Love" for no reason. Although most of the songs are upbeat with a faith based message, tracks like "Are You Ready" talk about death and when the time comes, He will take you away… that is, if you are ready. A hidden gem on this album is Strange's cover of Louie Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World." We have all heard this done by so many, but Strange throw hers country/gospel flare into the mix and creates a great atmosphere with a song that could have easily fallen flat amongst a million other versions floating around in record stores. Gospel and country music fanatics will really enjoy "Fire…Brimstone & Love" and it may just get you to church on Sunday!

Rising star Nypoleon and his CD "The Warm Up" is an amazing debut filled with soulful R&B and is guaranteed to make a big impact on the music scene. His influences stem from Boyz II Men to Michael Jackson, helping create his unique songwriting which blends old school R&B with Hip- Hop and Reggae. "One Last Time" highlights Nypoleon's smooth vocal performance and his ability to fuse his influential genres, creating a tone that is somewhere between Ne-Yo and Bob Marley. On "Always Be Around," his R&B side shines brightly and once again gives us another standout vocal track. RadioIndy is pleased to present Randolph with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Euphony"

The widely eclectic album "Euphony" by Randolph offers a vast variety of both songs and acoustic instrumentation. Most full band albums consist of the usual key instruments (drums, bass, guitar, and vocals) but Randolph has opened the door wide open on his newest collection of jazz/blues/world pop with use of djembe, cajon, congas, bongos, tablas, timpani, drum kit, violin, trombone, sax/flute, alto flue, bassoon, oboe, and numerous ethnic instruments. The result is magnificent and is well displayed on songs like "That Piece of Me" and "Analog Man." The album is also filled with numerous lead vocal appearances, all of which are tastefully done and fit well within the song choice. There is also a great throwback to the singers of the '60's on songs such as "Let's Get Connected." Talented vocalist Al Sofia shares his love for pop/easy listening music with his latest disc, "Destiny." With hints of Bobby Darin and Michael Buble, Sofia delivers an exceptional disc of both originals and cover songs. The title track "Destiny" shows his knack for creative songwriting and has that Philadelphia soul vibe to it. Although the album does feature some great original work, it is Sofia's covers that really shine through. Taking someone else's music and making it your own is never easy, but Sofia does it with ease on songs such as "You Raise Me Up" (popularized by Josh Groban). There are also some jazzy takes on well known Broadway numbers like "Seasons of Love" from the musical Rent and "It's Possible" from Suessical. Durbin's latest CD "We Are Honestmen" is a great addition for any R&B fan as it is filled with ideal mood music for any relaxing occasion.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Claire Hayek with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Intention"

RadioIndy is pleased to present Claire Hayek with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Intention"

Claire Hayek hits female fronted pop/rock right on the head with her new album "Intention." This CD features a very wide range of influences that set the tone for every song. Whether it's Hayek's view on war or an Alanis Morissette style pop tune, the Canadian based artist gives you quite a variety on "Intention." Songs like "Open Book" stand out as the main theme for Hayek's mid – 90's songwriting approach and features some nice lead guitar work. On a completely different end of the pop/rock spectrum, she throws in some Middle-Eastern flavor with "Charmer." Hayek delivers more of a rock than pop feel to her latest album and would be a great listen for anyone who is a fan of Melissa Ethridge or Alanis Morissette.

RadioIndy is pleased to present David Hansen with a GrIndie Award for the CD "All That I Could Give-New Edition"

RadioIndy is pleased to present David Hansen with a GrIndie Award for the CD "All That I Could Give-New Edition"

David Hansen's "All That I Could Give-New Edition" is a wonderful piece of music that really delivers to the adult contemporary crowd. Although his background is strongly rooted in jazz music, Hansen throws out more of an adult pop punch on his most recent effort. On the title track "All That I Could Give" screams of classic James Taylor vocal approach and is smooth and silky in style. If you are looking for some soothing jazz then "Love In Three Days" is a good track to check out. It features some very well polished jazz flute riffs and invites you into the artist true musical taste. This CD could easily be spun on any light rock radio station today and is a great listen. Should you find yourself wanting to hear something new and in the musical style of James Taylor or Steve Winwood then "All That I Could Give- New Edition" is a CD you will want to add to your collection.
