RadioIndy is pleased to present Red Directors with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Wave it In " If you like pop/rock with bigger-than-life hooks and sing-along choruses that stick with you long after the last note has drifted off into the night then, Red Directors, delivers the goods on their latest CD, "Wave It In," a ten song collection of highly polished power pop gems. RadioIndy is pleased to present Robert R. Patterson with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Never Said Good Bye " Robert R. Patterson's second CD, "Never Said Good Bye" finds the guitarist / singer-songwriter furthering an exploration of his unique songcraft in ways as original and inventive as they are satisfying. A virtuoso on guitar, Patterson turns his acoustic and electric guitars loose over 12 songs that delve into classical, folk, and blues influences which, nevertheless, blend seamlessly into a whole of potent musicality. Where the song "Five Dollar Mohawk" is a blues-rock workout with slashing slide licks, the hauntingly beautiful "Smile Little One" features acoustic picking as delicate as it is pristine. "Little Spanish Evening," an acoustic solo instrumental, is a veritable wordless lullaby, while the CD opener and titled track, "Never Said Good Bye" is an oddly effective composition that's both exotic and eccentric. Much of the album finds Patterson in elemental mode, his lone guitar and rich voice breathing life into songs of loss and redemption, but on the ballad, "Life," a deep and sonorous cello accompaniment raises the performance to solemnity. As second releases go, Robert R Patterson's "Never Said Good Bye" CD is a fine sophomore album, building on the echoes of his first, while pointing forward with his evolving potential.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Caroline Gilmour with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Someday " Caroline Gilmour's debut CD, "Someday," is simply an excellent example of female-fronted heartland rock played with fire, conviction, and the kind of passion that keeps rock 'n' roll vital. Both in her voice and straight-up rock style, Gilmour, despite being Scottish, actually recalls such North American artists as Melissa Etheridge, Heart, and Sheryl Crow (among others) over 12 songs imbued with Classic Rock-like melody and drive. The album opener, "Be With Me Tonight," for instance, gets things off to a rocking start with a power-chord-backed chorus worthy of any of Pat Benatar's best hits, while the infectious "After All This Time" has a hook that's tailor made for adult oriented rock play lists. Drawn from personal experience, the singer-songwriter's taut and emotionally charged songs such as "I Thank You" and "Before I Can Fall," also find their mark, due particularly to a powerful backing band at one with the material and the vision behind it. While she may be a newcomer to the scene, don't expect Caroline Gilmour's terrific CD to go unnoticed; "Someday" is here for fans of Classic Rock as polished as it is raw and untamed.

Arrington with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Michael Arrington, Vocal and Saxaphone " Whereas Michael Arrington's outstanding debut CD was a straight-up country effort showcasing the refined singer's well-crafted songs and the classic guitar-piano-steel accessories of the album's country roots, on "Michael Arrington, Vocal & Saxaphone" Arrington and his crack Nashville sidemen deliver a more diverse collection of mainly traditional songs that more than ably cover the rest of Nashville's grand legacy. With Arrington stepping back from the mic to concentrate on his ample sax talents, this 10-song CD of mostly instrumental covers recalls no less a figure than Arrington's childhood inspiration, the renowned saxophonist and bandleader Boots Randolph. With excellent renditions of such traditional nuggets as "Rolling in My Sweet Baby's Arms," and "Rocky Top," and the jazz ambience of "Misty," "Michael Arrington, Vocal & Saxaphone" has a throwback vibe that verily channels a bygone era. In that same vein, Arrington and band tackle standards such as "Summertime" and "Tennessee Waltz" with the kind of detail and precision one would expect from seasoned vets, while a vocal take of Merle Haggard's "Big City" has all the bounce and swing of the original. Michael Arrington and his fine "Michael Arrington, Vocal & Saxaphone" CD is testament to the depths of talent this man has to offer.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Anne Price with a GrIndie Award for the CD "A Few More Miles to Go " The accomplished folk singer, Anne Price, returns with her 4th CD, "A Few More Miles to Go," yet another wonderful collection of (mainly) traditional – if lesser exposed, potent folk songs. Opening with a cover of the late, under-appreciated contemporary folk stylist, Kate Wolf (an influence on Nanci Griffith), "The Trumpet Vine" serves as a terrific introduction for a varied set that reveals folk music's rich and evolving traditions. As a veteran and leading exponent of NYC's storied folk heritage, Price's mastery of the music's many styles is unquestioned. As such, her take on the mountain ballad-like "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key," a Woodie Guthrie tune originating from the seminal 1998 album by Billy Bragg & Wilco ("Mermaid Avenue") is true and affecting, as is her a cappella rendition of the English ballad, "The Keys of Canterbury." Elsewhere, Price's mid-range voice (not unlike Griffith's instrument these days) is the perfect vehicle for songs of homespun humor such as "Chocolate," children's sing-alongs songs like "Yucky Bugs," or praises to nature's wonder with "Black Waters." But nowhere is the singer better represented than on her Iris DeMent-like rendition of the playful Janis Ian tune, "My Autobiography." Without a doubt, Anne Price's excellent CD, "A Few More Miles to Go," is a fine addition to the American folk music library; the pairing of a revered songbook with a treasured performer.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Too Slim and the Taildraggers with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Free Your Mind " With their 10th studio album, titled "Free Your Mind", the roots-rockers of Too Slim and the Taildraggers deliver an album deserving of a broader recognition than the semi-legendary regional status the band has garnered as a live-circuit fixture in their area. Leader Tim "Too Slim" Langford has mixed classic rock with R&B sensibilities as the Taildraggers more than ably provide a powerhouse ensemble backing on the 11 original compositions. Setting the tone with both his raspy vocals and fiery guitar work, Too Slim exhorts redemption on the slow rocker "Peace With the Maker," does battle with his demons on the blues-rock stomp of "Been Through Hell," and mines the depths of the times on the charged, minor-key gem, "Last Train." With the help of a talented trio of female singers, "Free Your Mind," while relying on a roots-rock vernacular, otherwise transcends easy categorization. The accoutrements are classic guitar-stoked rock, but the individual songs make this album less a product of a genre or type than a fully-realized rock statement. For a band whose recording career spans almost 20 years, it is no less accomplished than what you would expect, and the grit & polish of Too Slim & the Taildraggers' "Free your Mind" will be enjoyed by fans of Tom Petty and ZZ Top.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Miss Rose and Her Rhythm Percolators with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Who Walks In " "Who Walks In," the debut album from Miss Rose and Her Rhythm Percolators, captures the sound & feel of 1920's & 1930's popular jazz styles with a mix of 11 classics & nearly forgotten songs from the era, including wonderful takes on such generation-crossing standards as "Ain't She Sweet" & "'Deed I Do". Singer & ukulele-player Sunga Rose leads a spot-on 4-piece band through a repertoire of pure nostalgia. And yet, this is no museum piece. The Rhythm Percolators quartet gives these songs new life with their deft & bouyant readings, making gems like the sprightly "At the Codfish Ball" sound almost contemporary. In addition, the outstanding title song, "Who Walks In," has a wonderful Eastern European bounce while the ballad "Shanghai Lil," exhibiting some of Miss Rose's best vocals, reveals as much about its era as it does the timelessness of great song craft. RadioIndy is pleased to present The Leftovers with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Reheat and Serve " Classic power-trio rock driven by the kind of fiery and blistering guitar flourishes that defines the genre is the order of the day on The Leftovers fine new CD, "Reheat and Serve." Alternately flashing the kind of licks a fan of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, or Stevie Ray Vaughan would drool over, veteran rocker D. Logan Foster leads a 3-piece band through a 9-song workout of blues fire and rock dynamics with drama and flair. With wife Cassandra Roxanne (Bass) and Bennie Bee (drums) proving a rock-solid and inventive rhythm section, classic blues rock gets a makeover on the Santana-inflected "Simple Woman" while the Southern chug of "Your Eyes Give You Away" are right out of the Lynyrd Skynyrd playbook. CD-opener, "Let's Do It Again" surges with a Hendrix-like fury as Foster's slashing chops cuts through the song like lightning bolts. But in the best of power-trio traditions (e.g., Cream, Hendrix Experience, Blue Cheer), sheer sonic power is often tempered in service of the song, as on the closer, "Mississippi Blues," a blues shuffle that features Foster's earthy and down-home vocals to best effect. Classic by design and execution, The Leftovers CD, "Reheat and Serve" is anything but warmed-over: instead, it's a vibrant and charged tasting of blues-rock that will always have a place on the classic rock menu.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Reform with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Reformed " Equal parts jazz and instrumental psychedelic / progressive rock, Reform's debut CD, "Reformed," charts a middle ground that ably fuses classic styles and influences - with an unusual twist. With a stellar 6-piece ensemble behind him, harmonica player Àlvaro Fernandez Gavíria's full, lower-octave playing serves as a primary lead instrument for much of the album. With studied restraint, Gaviria's tone – which recalls that of accomplished blues harp-stylist, Corky Siegel, approaches his instrument like a fusion-oriented Miles Davis, drawing out found harmonics within the framework of the band's rich and melodic songscapes. Guitarists Johan Glasson and Peter Åkerberg create the underpinning for Reform's – at times, Steely Dan-like jazz-rock sound, while drummers Anders Bergman and Åke Eriksson provide the forward thrust, effectively filling passages with deft and meticulous hits and textures. Not to go unmentioned, bassist Jesper Bergman and keyboard player, Magnus Ramel's contributions are no less vital - and noteworthy, to Reform's decidedly adventurous leanings. Regardless of whether it's fusion jazz or spacey art rock, Reform's CD is a terrific set of original music by unique players with unbounded skills.

Lucas' lyrics deal with the never-ending political issues of our time and don't hold back on his sentiments. Close your eyes and listen to Lucas' vocals as they are pure, crisp, and simple, whereas you might even think you are hearing Neil Young. "Babylon Rising" is piano-driven with an energetic Blues/Rock tonality. The original album contained nine tracks, but the addition of a new track, "Stars In The Night," gives the listeners a taste of nice harmonies and moving beats. RadioIndy is pleased to present Swingadelic with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Another Monday Night " On "Another Monday Night," the latest CD from Swingadelic, the accomplished "little" big band from the NY area shines as an ensemble as much as they do a collection of prolific soloists, proving the timelessness of sparkling and proficient jazz in an era when it sometimes feels like the great American invention has been marginalized. Bristling with solos of melody and bravura – like the stratospheric tenor of "Dance With You" or the deft piano skills of the "Puttin' On the Ritz"-like "Early Morning Special" – this group resembles no less a band (though half the size) than the famed Count Basie Orchestra, investing each number with volleys of inspired but precise mayhem. Can they swing? Absolutely! Their take on Ellington's "The Gal From Joe's" is insistent and nuanced. Can they get down and dirty? The dynamics of the Basie-esque "Buddy's Thang" make that a resounding "yes." What about the blues? They've got it covered. "Busy Body Blues" and "Big Band Blues" are steeped in the language and phraseology of the idiom's best practitioners. They do vocals too: "Back In New York City" is an excellent original, praising the city that never sleeps with a treatment that is both classic and contemporary – or, if you will, timeless. The music and playing on Swingadelic's latest disc "Another Monday Night," will want you hearing more of this swinging jazz with the kind of flair, melody, and dynamics to stir the heart and move the feet.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Heartscore with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Touch Me " Heartscore's latest CD, "Touch Me," an inventive, adventurous, and – at times, bold, blend of modern rock styles, is both flamboyant and heady, a mixture as explosive as it is effective. Trading off Zappa-like song-shifts, sweeping dramatics worthy of Queen, or Progressive rock evocations reminiscent of Be-Bop Deluxe and /or Yes, "Touch Me" finds German multi-instrumentalist Dirk Radloff exploring rock's cerebral corners to produce a work that's both unusual and accessible. And while modernist and intellectual in its idiosyncrasy, tracks like "I'm Running" and the pretty, "You Are So Beautiful" attest to Heartscore's ability to neatly meld untamed and provocative arrangements with tunes that are fine and tuneful. Elsewhere, angular and abrasive torrents of sound make originals like "Never Leave the Highway" and lead song, "I Did It" into gems of propulsive dissonance. With Radloff's affected and stylized vocal delivery filling in the blanks, and smart synthesizer fills supplementing a guitar-bass-drum core, Heartscore's "Touch Me" CD is a triumph of substance and style sure to appeal to fans of progressive and original rock.

Highlights include "Just a Little Love We Need" and the topical "Global Warming," both owing a debt to Bob Marley-influenced grooves, but on "Mama" he shines with a Jimmy Cliff-like pop sensibility that transcends mere reggae-style labels. On "Mama Roots" Harris is once again backed by a stellar rhythm section, typically concise guitar fills, affecting horn parts, and backing vocals from a female chorus that is integral and subtle. Lyrically, there is a '70's-centric affirmative and positive social relevance running through all his songs as he alternately exhorts, cajoles, and pleads for the kind of world that seemed nearer to realization in those more innocent times. Nevertheless, there is nothing out of date about either Jerry Harris' message or the timeless brand of reggae he so effortlessly puts forth. Jerry Harris' "Mama Roots" CD continues an ageless tradition of intoxicating Reggae/Rocksteady music.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Paul Estro with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Paul Estro " Paul Estro's self-titled debut forges a new and delightful territory in the country gospel music scene. Estro's raw and witty lyricism, coupled with his intimate Southern backwoods-style vocal intonations, fuses to create a palatable and innovative collection unlike its contemporaries. Throughout the 8-song CD, Estro relies on twangy guitar and female Gospel chorus - not to mention the occasional power chord - to deliver songs that extol the virtues of his faith, while skewering the trappings of the modern church. RadioIndy is pleased to present Andrea Hopkins & Jonathan Katz with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Happy Talk" Twirling Jonathan Katz's nimble and deft piano accompaniment around her finger like an alluring chanteuse, Andrea Hopkins explores Vocal Jazz styles in a voice as emotive as it is beguiling on their engaging and very fine CD, "Happy Talk." Tackling a collection of primarily Great American Songbook standards – from Hoagy Carmichaels' "The Nearness of You," to Harold Arlen's immortal "Over the Rainbow," to Ray Noble's "Cherokee," Hopkins & Katz neatly strike a balance between provocative interpretations and familiar readings, proving how much life is still left in these old warhorses. Nevertheless, covering such standards as these (as well as "Bye Bye Blackbird" or "Misty") can be a double-edged sword for performers, exposing - as it does, new renditions to the harsh glow of comparison (i.e., to the Sinatra's, Fitzgerald's, and Garlands et al whose voices defined the songbook.) To their credit, the duo handles the challenge with assurance and no lack of self- confidence. Hopkins' voice is equal parts sultry, evocative, and pitch perfect, while Katz' keys delve the melodic and harmonic possibilities of these classic tunes with intelligence and nuance, but always in a manner that allows Hopkins room to interpret. In sum, the combined talents and sheer musicality of Andrea Hopkins & Jonathan Katz make "Happy Talk" an endearing and completely satisfying CD.

With Matt Aquiline and Belen Pifel trading off lead singing duties, Kid Goat strikes a nifty balance over 13 guitar-driven songs that alternately rock, swing, and sway. A jangle guitar underpins the hook-filled opener, "Must Be Blind," as the duo harmonize in the best southern tradition, while on "From You," Pifel's delicate country-tinged voice, which is reminiscent of Tift Merritt's, is the perfect vehicle for an memorable, pretty tune. Elsewhere, Aquiline's voice calls to mind the breakthrough BoDeans debut LP, with songs like "Pennsylvania" and "Working World" capturing the rawness at the heart of great rock 'n' roll. All told, "These People Aren't You" is a solid debut CD for Kid Goat; one that knocks down borders in the service of terrific Americana rock.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Marc James with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Maximum Action " Marc James' 8-song CD, "Maximum Action," is a brilliant mix of David Bowie-meets-Bryan Ferry Euro-pop that is fit for a dance club as well as for a cabaret. Relying primarily on ambient, synth-infused soundscapes, James delivers wry, clever, and funny lyrics with an arch delivery invoking a dapper rogue completely unaware of his obviousness. The lead track, "The Perfect Stranger," captures this most effectively with a dry but melodic vocal in full seductive mode. "Hard Driving Music" rides a bouncing disco-like bass-line in a tuneful exercise that is pure schmaltz ("Do you want to swing, to dance, and sway to that hard driving rocking and rolling") - and is absolutely irresistible. On "Tribute to Marilyn" (yes, Monroe) James references Ray Davies' classic "Celluloid Heroes" with a straight-faced ingenuousness that is as subversive as it is catchy. Closing the album as strongly as it begins, "You Have A Secret" is built on a classic doo-**** chord progression that becomes transformed by a breathy, understated narrative (a la Leonard Cohen), and embellished by a solemn and perfect background chorus. In the end, Marc James' "Maximum Action" CD is that rare intriguing album by an artist that will win you over with his lush, melodic accessibility.

RadioIndy is pleased to present the archimedian pOiNt with a GrIndie Award for the CD "genre specific" "genre specific" is a most curious title for the debut 6-song CD by, the archimedian pOiNt, because within its rocking but accessible grooves are the kind of stylistic shifts that render such labels as metal, progressive rock, thrash, or post grunge simply inadequate. Yes, "genre specific" can boast tasteful and well-executed excursions into these more or less identifiable genres, but such exclamations are carried only in service of the song, and never as superfluous window dressing. Promoting an agenda of social consciousness and global awareness, songs like "Overdrive" & "Relic" rock with fierce - and classic hard rock (think Rush, Fugazzi, System of a Down) intensity, while the mix of acoustic guitar with sampled George W. Bush speechifyin' in "Hubris" recalls nothing less than G'n'R-like grandeur. But in the languid lead vocal of "Nemesis Domesticus" an echo of Kurt Cobain gives way to the sonic charge of thundering guitar riffs that Led Zeppelin began perfecting four decades ago. All in all, the CD "genre specific" by, the archimedian pOiNt, is a very promising blast of rock bravado from an undersized behemoth (it's a 2-man group) with hard rocking roots.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Refracture with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Left For Dead Ep " House music is a mystifyingly multitude of Electronica / Dance music with numerous degrees of specialization and nuances. Beats Per Minute (BPM), textural definition and use / non-use of vocals are but a few of the defining characteristics that divide such subgenres of House as Dirty House, French House, and Electro House. Refracture's 3-song CD EP, "Left for Dead," blends elements of different subgenres - most notably Electro House - meaning, the music has the requisite BPM's, is anchored by propulsive bass lines, and features the sonic balance / blend associated with the House styles. All 3 tracks are catchy, infectious, and danceable as all get-out (i.e., very danceable indeed!). The title track, "Left for Dead" kicks things off with a slow-build synth swirl that hesitates before exploding into an irresistible groove punctuated by sonic squeaks and squalls that drop out of nowhere, keeping the mix continuously fresh. "Space Riot" and "Energy Flow" are both more immediate and insistent, but no less engaging, and each makes a case for being the best of the 3 mixes on the CD. If you're a House music connoisseur you will make up your own mind about the House attributes and qualifications of Refracture's "Left for Dead" EP, but if you're an Electronica music fan I think you'll find this CD delivers where it counts: on the dance floor.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Vick Allen with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Truth Be Told... " Sequencing a full-length CD is an art unto itself and the best kept secret to making a solid album. As important as it is to stack strong tracks near the beginning of an album, it's often those last one or two songs that make the difference in getting a listener to come back again and again. R&B hit- maker, Vick Allen, and his newest CD "Truth Be Told…" is an 11-song Urban / R&B treasure, and is a perfect example of getting it right. Opening with the appropriately titled "I'm Hooked," an up tempo, Al Green-like groove punctuated by Memphis-style horn bursts, Allen sets the tone for the diverse platter of R&B that follows. "You Stay On My Mind" is an inspired piece of infectious Southern Soul, while "Forbidden Love Affair" finds Allen revealing his inner R. Kelly; and "As Long As I Got My Baby" serves up a dash of funk, it is followed by the completely contemporary soul of "I Know You Got a Man." Regardless of style, though, "Truth Be Told…" is seamless and cohesive, linked as it were by inventive and smart arrangements, superb musicianship, and the kind of background vocals that defines great Urban music and, of course, Allen's smooth high tenor, a voice that alternately echoes Green, as well as lesser known R&B luminaries like Eddie Kendricks, Tyrone Davis or Howard Tate. But it's the CD closer, "That's Heaven to Me", a solemn and uplifting Sam Cooke cover with the kind of message and melody Stevie Wonder later perfected on songs like "Heaven Help Us All" that seals the deal and will ensure repeated listens. Sequenced for maximum effect and filled with classic R&B grooves from beginning to end, Vick Allen's "Truth Be Told…" CD is a terrific album and a welcome addition to the Soul field.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Rick Parnell with a GrIndie Award for the CD "One Eye Open " Despite the almost lo-fi, demo-like feel of Rick Parnell's "One Eye Open" CD, the strong 6-song debut from this Canadian singer-songwriter has a primal immediacy often filtered out of big-budget, major label projects. And that's good. What Parnell offers are six stripped-down, completely engaging contemporary folk songs featuring his sometimes raspy vocals over the sparest of guitar strumming. In its directness and simple arrangements "One Eye Open" recalls Bon Iver's breakthrough in '08 as well as the songs and performances of such troubadours as Richard Buckner or Jeff Buckley. But Parnell is an original, and on tuneful songs like "Everybody's Wrong" and "I'm Coming Home" his rough-hewn voice is as evocative as the words that spill out in his soulful delivery. "Come Saturday," has a bit more edge, thanks to a slyly subdued slide accompaniment, but it is no less pleasing, and the last track, "One More Song" offers just the right touch of melancholy to close the CD. Rick Parnell's "One Eye Open" CD is a cross-generational work that owes a debt to classic singer-songwriter stylists, but is also completely right for contemporary listeners of any generation.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Mary Paulson with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Ballads & Blues " Mary Paulson has compiled a beautiful blend of soft rock ballads with influences of country and blues on her latest disc, "Ballads & Blues." Paulson is quite a talented singer as her vocals are clean and polished with fine clarity. She seamlessly transitions from one style to another, showing impressive versatility. The Hammond organ solo on "My Summer" captures the upbeat twelve bar blues feel while the vocals and band are solid and tight. Turn the tables around and get a taste of country spice on "Believe in Me" with the banjo and fiddle balancing the mix on this tuneful song. "Give Me a Reason," written by Peter Kossek who resides in Denmark, is strong and powerful with lyrics that will tug at your heart. Another ballad that is stunning is "Untouchable Love" with an electric piano accompaniment that has a hint of bluesy flavor. RadioIndy is pleased to present Dimitris Kotronakis with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Echomythia " Get ready to be awed and dazzled by the nimble fingers of Dimitris Kotronakis and his anthology of brilliant classical guitar works with flavors of Latin/Jazz on his disc, "Echomythia." Kotronakis is an exquisite guitarist who plays with emotive and intense precision. The trills, turns, and bends he so eloquently plays gives rise to the versatility of this artist as he plays with various tempos and powerful dynamics. "Plainte" and "Marta" shows off the softer side of this music as Kotronakis performs with emotional and heartfelt ability. "Tuhu (homage a Villa-lobos)" is razor sharp and is steeped with Brazilian flair. "The Flight of the Bumblebee," a song known for its vigorous spirit, is truly amazing as Kotronakis runs full throttle across the fret board. Fans of classical guitar embedded with the essence of Latin/Jazz will not be disappointed when hearing the entertaining and delightful songs of "Echomythia."

RadioIndy is pleased to present Sue Quigley with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Perfect Chaos" "Perfect Chaos," Sue Quigley's latest CD, is a polished continuation of this fine Seattle-bred singer-songwriter's exploration of traditional and classic female rock forms. This time around, though, the acoustic guitars are a little more pronounced and the rhythms less insistent, but the hooks are no less engaging and Quigley's resonant voice still squeezes every last drop of blood from her songs' intricate veins. And rich veins they are. "Fallen World" masterfully blends a syncopated rhythm to a sonorous cello in a moving bid for hope and redemption, while the melodic "Paper Tiger" languorous vocal belies the rage smoldering barely under the surface. "Picture in a Drawer" and "She's Not Talking to You" are nifty mid-tempo numbers reminiscent of female rock forebears like Johnette Napolitano, Sass Jordan, or Patty Smyth. But on the album's stripped down ballads - such as the closer, "How It's Going to Be," with it's demo-like vocal and acoustic guitar-only performance – or the moving "Yours to Say," Quigley reveals the softer edges of a fiercely independent artist to best effect. All told, "Perfect Chaos" is a terrific alternative pop/rock-oriented CD and a fine addition to Sue Quigley's growing and noteworthy canon.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Jerad Finck with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Jerad Finck" Jerad Finck's self-titled debut CD is a 12-song showcase for a newcomer with the discerning instincts of a pop-rock veteran. Whether delivering frantic, insistent rockers like "Another" or achingly delicate ballads "Movin' On," the CD is a model of pop balance and rock fire. While several tracks benefit from nuanced and deftly-charted string arrangements, the driving rhythm of "You" and the blistering guitar solo of "Whatever You Want" ensure that the rock in pop-rock gets its due. Robin Horlock's aptly titled third CD; "Music." is an 11-song collection of tuneful, well-constructed songs that reflect the singer's Adult Contemporary experiences to great effect. Noted for the relaxed but soulful passion in his vocals, Horlock delivers hook-filled, guitar-based tunes with the ease and capability of a Jack Johnson or John Mayer, but without surrendering his own considerable uniqueness. Employing extremely tasteful blends of acoustic and electric fretwork throughout, "Music." highlights consist of Adult Contemporary gems that showcase styles ranging from California-style soft rock "Here & Now" to post-Eagles Don Henley pop-rock "Everything Falls Apart." On "The Difference Between Day and Night" Horlock even seems to channel the '70's-era voice of John Sebastian, while "Life Goes On" features spare but distinctly affective sax lines to flesh out a stirring anthem of hope. On this 8-song offering, only the lead track (and single) "Pump Up the Love" is entirely new, as the rest of the disc is comprised of remixes of club favorites, "Colour," Calling Around the World," "Trapped," and "Total Controller." "Pump Up the Love," though, like "Trapped" or "Colour," evokes as well the hook-centric quality of UK-style Top 40 pop to fine effect. "Total Controller," in fact, offers up a rousing sing-along chorus not unlike The Killers' "Somebody Told Me." Throughout "Xtended.dance," Donovan demonstrates an uncanny knack for affecting the perfect vocal touch as his supple and emotive voice bends, swoops, and glides over synth-drenched Electronica that makes this CD as Top 40-worthy as it is danceable.

RadioIndy is pleased to present The Paul Cook Project with a GrIndie Award for the CD "The Paul Cook Project" The inescapable lesson learned by Susan Boyle's meteoric rise to international YouTube fame is that singing talent is not the exclusive domain of attractive, expertly-coiffed 20-somethings belting out staid and redundant songs for a TV audience of musical reactionaries. The recently released disc, "The Paul Cook Project" is an album of original songs performed by various (unknown) singers from Abilene, Texas, drives that lesson home over the course of 15 tuneful, well-crafted, and meaning-filled songs that ache with sincerity and positivism. From the lush-pop strains of "Making Memories" to the contemporary country pulse of the Anytown, USA, narrative, "Light It Up"; from the self-empowerment piano ballad "I Can Win" to the inspirational strains of "Our Time," "The Paul Cook Project" melds a diversity of musical forms in a cohesive collection, thanks mainly to Cook's unerring knack for accessible and memorable melodies. Underscoring the entire CD is a solemn sense of Christian faith (made overt on songs such as, "Don't Run Away" and "Fruit of the Spirit"), but the spirituality is inclusive, not heavy-handed or preachy. "The Paul Cook Project" is a very listenable, fun (check out the Roger Miller-like ditty, "I Do What I Do") uplifting and, most of all, engaging CD of well-conceived, well-played & (gasp!) well-sung songs by the guy next door and an anonymous – but talented, community of singers.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Juniper with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Crazy Love" Juniper's recently released album "Crazy Love" delivers an edgy and original showcase of alternative rock music. Right from the first track, "You Rock My World," the drum beats pulse subtly into your soul while the strong and solid guitar plays driving riffs. The strong and emotive lead vocals on the title track "Crazy Love" are reminiscent of the popular female vocalist Alanis Morissette. RadioIndy is pleased to present Monkey Bones with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Television " Monkey Bones and their debut CD, "Television" is an all-out rock attack of blazing guitars, impassioned vocals, biting lyrics, and the rock-solid kind of playing to bring it all home. Buoyed by a big beat-infused rhythm section firing on all cylinders, "Television" features 12 original songs that rarely let up. But despite an almost relentless fury, The Monkey Bones deftly balance many of their riff-heavy songs with effective and at times, subtle background vocals that add dimension and nuance to a style not always noted for such attributes. Notably, "Sunny Rays" shows the band can deliver the arena rock ballad as needed while "Hammer Comin' Down" offers up a rich vein of Southern Rock swagger. RadioIndy is pleased to present Oriana LaRusso with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Oriana's Opiphany" "Oriana's Opiphany," the second released CD from Oriana LaRusso, is a smart and contemporary collection of dance-pop tunes by a young singer with the poise and polish of a seasoned vet. LaRusso's sometimes sultry and smoky voice plays off a synth and beat-laden soundtrack in a way that is often original and compelling. On the ballad, "More Time," she shows remarkable control at the lower register of her voice while on the R&B-drenched "Not Anymore" she commands the middle register like a love-weary chanteuse. The bulk of the CD sports a predominantly Urban / Top 40 dance feel with LaRusso not only up to the material but leading it with a heady confidence. If at times you hear echoes of Madonna ("Pass Me By") or Shakira ("Watch Me"), or even J-Lo ("Standing Still in Love"), one realizes the lofty aspirations the singer has set for herself. To its credit, "Oriana's Opiphany" is a fine showcase for a singer with not only ambition, but talent as well.

RadioIndy is pleased to present BE BLACK with a GrIndie Award for the CD "ALL LEVEL" BE BLACK and his latest single "ALL LEVEL" is pumped up with cool and trendy R&B. The production quality is great, as this song is multi-layered and powered by synth sounds and electronic drums which make the catchy rhythm solid and steady. RadioIndy is pleased to present Bold Monkey with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Another Way to Say Human Race" Bold Monkey's, "Another Way to Say Human Race," CD is a collection of contemporary folk songs from a singer-songwriter with a keen and well-honed sense of song craft and the voice to put them over. Employing only the sparest of guitar phrasing, Bold Monkey achieves a stripped-down, open mic coffeehouse intimacy to showcase compelling songs full of wry and incisive observations. Recalling the wordplay of an Elvis Costello or Joe Henry on songs such as "If You're Lucky" and "Enlightenment Is In Question," Bold Monkey's Dylan Joshua Edmiston successfully navigates the demands of the nowhere-to-hide song arrangements with a deft touch. On the Dylan-esquely titled, "Navigably Subsequent," comparisons to Costello is also deserved for the constricted and breathy vocal delivery that snakes in and out of light-as-air guitar fills and tastefully understated vibes accompaniment. RadioIndy is pleased to present Cardona with a GrIndie Award for the CD "You'll Like It" Cardona's CD, "You'll Like It" employs synthesizer, echo, some propulsive drumming and, on the opening title track, a jazzy dollop of electric piano, to push the dance-centric and uptown-leaning musical agenda of Brooklyn performer, Joe Cardona. This three song disc verily smacks of unbuttoned satin shirts, garish medallions, and dance floors ablaze under flashing club lights as Cardona croons in an almost drone-like and atonal - but loosely melodic, voice about the everyday "give and take" that is modern urban life. Eschewing deeply meaningful or profound lyrics, "You'll Like It" boasts the kinds of street-tough brashness of a testosterone-fueled Brooklyn club-crawler. RadioIndy is pleased to present Milestone with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Medley" Easy listening instrumentals are abounding on Milestone's newest record, "Medley." Although the album does have faint hints of 1980's tones (i.e. Philip Glass), the record is quite contemporary and a good listen as well. The opening track, "Towards the Unknown," sets the overall mood and gives a taste of what's to come. A wall of synthesizers and pianos make up most of these rainy day numbers and are sometimes highlighted by some nice guitar fills. A great example of this would be on "In the Memory of Heroes" and "Half-way Behind." Milestone has done a terrific job in choosing the instrumentation wisely as this paints the tone color pallet that "Medley" offers up. This album is a great buy for anyone wanting some relaxing tunes to de-stress to or is just looking for some top notch instrumental music.

Although most of the tracks have that Jimmy Buffet beach flare to them, there are also some nice hints of country and Irish sounds on the album. The seaside themes are most fitting on songs like "Tybee Island" and "I've Got Mexico." Listen to any one of these tracks and you'll swear you're sitting on the sand listening to the waves rolling in. Tolley also features a cover of the Righteous Brothers classic, "Unchained Melody," a song which Gary performs with his own style and grace. Don't forget to check out "Poor Boys Delight" with its calming Celtic vibe. Tolley does offer an eclectic mix on "Tybee Tyme," but any Buffet fan will dig it for sure.

His record, "In Season Songs for the Sin Sick Soul," is a tasty mix of 50's soul and southern gospel. Although each song is spiritually themed, this shouldn't stop you from giving this record a good chance if that genre isn't your thing. Smyer's vocals are steeped in the sounds of Sam & Dave or Eddie Kendricks, which is no easy feat. Whether it's "Walk Around Heaven All Day" or "I Got Something Within Me," Smyer consistently delivers a fine performance and will make you wish he was preaching down the street from your house. There is also a beautiful classic gospel cover, "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," which he eloquently puts his own stamp on. Be sure to give a good listen to the fine guitar playing on this record which is very James Burton-esque. Whether you're a gospel fan or just looking for some good soul music, Harry Smyer and his album, "In Season Songs for the Sin Sick Soul," is the way to go.

Some of the talented male and female artists performing on the CD include Informative Historyman, Dobby Dobson, Odel Johnson, Kingfish Riddim, Spanner Banner, Snatcha Lion, Jahsmin, ChillRootz and L.A. Lallabella from Canada's Moutain Edge Band. The lyrics throughout this entire collection of songs send a message of awareness on many topics. Off beat rhythmic patterns and chanted vocals give spirited grace to "Historyman Chant." "Blazing Jealousy" not only has strong and sincere vocals but the background harmonies add a touch of flavor. As reggae is mostly associated with drum patterns and strong bass lines, notice the incorporation of the strings on songs such as "Foolish Me" and "I Cry." RadioIndy is pleased to present Mike Ringler with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Note-ified" The sounds of the late 1960's psychedelic movement are still alive and well! Don't believe us? Well, just listen to "Note-ified" the latest release by Mike Ringler and you may reconsider your answer. The CD opens with that staple fuzz guitar tone on the song "You Can Shine," a track that also features vocal work very reminiscent of The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. Ringler also delves into the British sounds made popular by The Beatles and The Hollies with songs such as "Hope" and "We Know You're Right." There is also an excellent guitar solo on "Words Through Time," which has a cool Moody Blues effect to it. All in all, "Note-ified" screams of "flower power" and is a great album for any fan of that wildly colorful era.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Gal Tamir with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Voluntad" From the stages of theatre to the world of pop music, Gal Tamir is proving his worth with "Voluntad." Between being raised in Israel and performing on stage in various plays such as Grease, Tamir gathers up all of his influences to produce a well written Latin pop record. His warm, mature voice is really what makes this album come alive and it does not let you down. A solo vocal on "Nadie Nos Vio" shows Tamir's vocal range and just what he has to offer. There is also a beautiful duet with a lead female vocalist on "Sueno," which compliments Tamir's voice very nicely. Also, keep your ears alert for the standard Latin dance number on the track "Donde Van?." Any fan that is fluent in Spanish or a fan of Latin pop music will thoroughly enjoy "Voluntad."

RadioIndy is pleased to present E.Z. Riders with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Experienced Zydeco Riders" The blues/rock band, E.Z. Riders, have released a throwback to the days of Humble Pie with their latest effort, "Experienced Zydeco Riders." Their roots are obvious, with raging Steve Marriott guitar riffs and gritty vocal tones reminiscent of early ZZ Top. "Witchy Woman" is by far the best track on the CD and is not an Eagles cover. Instead, it is an E.Z. Riders blues jaunt, filled with Lynyrd Skynyrd style slide guitar playing. That is really what this band and this disc are all about; strong and rocking guitars. If you crave more string bending guitar action, give a listen to songs like "I Should Have Quit You" and "Mean Mistreater" and you will get your fill. "Experienced Zydeco Riders" belongs in the hands of any 70's blues/rock fan.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Warped Angel with a GrIndie Award for the CD "I Wanna Dream" From the city that brought us Wayne Newton and The Killers, Las Vegas' own Warped Angel are back with their newest disc "I Wanna Dream." The band is comprised of singer/songwriter Lisa Chambliss and musician/songwriter Chris Chimo. Together, they have created an album filled with industrial and electro angst. Don't take that last sentence lightly, Chambliss' voice is chocked full of emotion and drive. "We use the power of emotion to write the lyrics and compose the music," says Chambliss and that can easily be heard on the title track "I Wanna Dream." There are also some hints of Nine Inch Nails hardcore tones scattered about this disc. Just listen to songs like "Distance" and "My War" as they ooze that NIN sound. If you are into that Euro/Industrial rock sound, than Warped Angel is a safe bet.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Game Six with a GrIndie Award for the CD "God, Love & Mexico" The musical duo, Game Six, mixes country music with spiritual themes, tropical, folk, rock, Latin, and jazz sounds on "God, Love & Mexico." Their sound is primarily country, but the choices of instrumentation really throws each song in a different direction. For instance, "Shamrock Bar" has the classic pedal steel sound which is very much associated with country, but it is played more in a Hawaiian/Slack key form with a tropical drum groove underneath. "Bahia de Banderas" is also another unique track that features some eclectic Mexican sounds with a sweet brass section and the occasional Spanish sung vocals. "God, Love & Mexico" is a great CD for any Jimmy Buffet fan as it mixes country with tropical themes throughout.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Jenuine J.A. with a GrIndie Award for the CD "The Burden of Proof" Jenuine J.A.'s latest rap record "The Burden of Proof" is a great throwback to the early sounds of that genre. Jenuine isn't exactly a hip-hop artist as his songs rely more on his lyrics and the instrumentation than just beats. The opening track, "Dyin' to Floss" says it all, as you can hear how Jenuine wants his words to be heard and not lost under a sea of electronic drums. His struggle to be heard is evident throughout the disc as he lets listeners in on his personal hurdles in becoming a successful rap star. Just listen to "What's Your Plan?" and you will feel what he has gone through. The title of "The (Lost) Art of Storytellin'" is a truthful statement about where most rap songs are at today. They rely more on abusive lyrics, instead of just telling a story. If you want to hear rap music the way it should be done, you won't be disappointed when you hear "The Burden of Proof."

RadioIndy is pleased to present Ric Seaberg with a GrIndie Award for the CD "A Thousand Songs" Veteran songwriter Ric Seaberg takes listeners for a musical journey through his life and much more on "A Thousand Songs." Overall, Seaberg's songs are very reminiscent of late 70's Jackson Browne, both in his vocal approach and melodies. The Browne influence can be heard throughout the disc, but is most recognizable on "The Queen of Hollywood High" and "In My Daddy's Car." There are also some faint hints of John Lennon and Warren Zevon scattered about as well. Seaberg also touches upon the subject of divorce in songs such as "Make it About Me" and "Smiley Emoticon." If you can't, then perhaps listening to "Whitelite Britelite" by Auradrone will help you see the big picture. Hailing from Los Angeles, the band is fronted by the very talented Jon Mack. Her vocals are filled with tasty lyrics and sex appeal to the max. Just give a good listen to songs like "Auto Erotic" and "A Channel," and listeners will be able to hear her vocals at their best. The band is also very good and is great at changing the style of songs while still keeping that "Auradrone" sound throughout it all.
